One of London’s oldest and most iconic cinemas is closing down following legal dispute
After 91 years, the historic and well-known movie theater, The Curzon Mayfair in London, will be shutting its doors for good.
As reported by The Standard, the location that initially debuted in 1934 is set for a change. Owner Fantasio plans to rebrand and overhaul the site, transforming it into a contemporary cinema, entertainment, media center, and dining hotspot.
After a prolonged legal battle with the previous tenants of the building, Curzon Cinemas (who were against the planned changes), have officially stepped out of the court case. This decision paves the way for the long-awaited redevelopment, a significant milestone for us who have been eagerly awaiting its progress.

Fantasio’s CEO, Dan Zaum, expressed his disappointment at the prolonged duration but also felt relieved now that it’s finally done, allowing them to move forward.
Our fervor lies in crafting London’s exceptional cinematic adventure. The Mayfair cinema will not only be driven by films but also transform into a dynamic hub that caters to the broader community, offering creativity, social interaction, educational opportunities, and much more.
The business intends to invest more than fifteen million pounds towards a renovation project. The goal is to preserve certain historical aspects, enhance the design, lighting, and both audio-visual and technological equipment, along with incorporating an on-site eatery and watering hole.
The cinema plans to maintain its current two screens while upgrading to plush seating options, and it will still hold premiere events as usual.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited about our plan to revolutionize movie-watching experiences at The Curzon Mayfair. For far too long, cinemas have been losing their sparkle, and it’s time for a change. Our vision is to breathe new life into film viewing, making it just as captivating and thrilling as the movies themselves!
It seems that moviegoers nationwide have been decreasing in number, and this isn’t due to any decline in the quality of the movies being produced. Instead, other factors might be at play.
As a connoisseur, I can’t help but feel underwhelmed when the experience lacks personal touch. It’s disappointing not to find cozy, reclining seats with ample space, and it’s disheartening when the selection of food and drink is less than exceptional. What truly saddens me is being treated as just another number by a faceless corporation, instead of feeling valued and unique, seeking a memorable moment.
For approximately eight years, Curzon had been planning to renovate the cinema, but those plans were abruptly halted by Fantasio.
Though deeply fond of Curzon Mayfair, it’s with sadness that we must vacate the premises and channel our efforts into creating a leading venue in another part of London, as stated by the company.
