One of best Star Wars series returns in 2025, and it’s not Andor
As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the saga unfold across galaxies, dimensions, and mediums, I am beyond excited for the return of the groundbreaking animated anthology series, Star Wars: Visions! Having followed its evolution since Volume 1 debuted in 2021, I have been captivated by the unique animation, daring storytelling, and cultural influences that this series brings to the table.
Excitedly speaking, I must share some fantastic news! Last month, Disney and Lucasfilm confirmed that my beloved “Andor” will be back for a second season on Disney+ in April 2025. It’s not just any series coming back next year; it’s the critically acclaimed “Star Wars” series we all adore returning to our screens!
This week, Lucasfilm revealed that a much-loved series is set to debut on Disney+ in 2025, and this may be a surprise to many, as it has not received widespread attention.
I’d like to discuss “Star Wars: Visions”, an animated collection of tales connected to or influenced by the Star Wars universe, each presented with a distinctive cultural perspective.
Star Wars: Visions Volume 1 premiered in 2021, featuring nine anime-style short tales from seven distinct Japanese studios: Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Production I.G, and Science Saru. The second volume was unveiled on Disney+ in 2023, broadening the concept by showcasing stories told and animated by studios worldwide, including Aardman (U.K.), El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Studio Mir (South Korea), Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan), Lucasfilm (U.S.), and Triggerfish (South Africa/Ireland).
Both volumes, specifically Volumes 1 and 2, were massive critical successes. They were highly appreciated for their distinctive animation style and daring storytelling. Volume 1 garnered an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lauding it as “exceptionally animated” and “highly imaginative.” On the other hand, Volume 2 achieved a flawless 100%, earning it accolades as “the masterwork of Jedi Masters.
It’s not surprising at all, given the overwhelming acclaim, that we can expect a third installment of “Star Wars: Visions“. Lucasfilm has officially announced the release of Volume 3 in 2025, and they have also disclosed the studios that will contribute to this new volume.
In the approaching season, the series Star Wars: Visions will go back to its original anime foundation. The third volume will consist of nine short episodes from nine distinct anime production studios. Previous collaborators Kamikaze Douga, Kinema citrus Co.,Production I.G, and TRIGGER will team up with five new animation studios: ANIMA (co-produced with Kamikaze Douga), David Production, Polygon Pictures, Project Studio Q, and WIT Studio.
For individuals new to the realm of anime, these are quite significant figures. The studio Production I.G is renowned for its creation of “Ghost in the Shell”, while TRIGGER has been responsible for hits like “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” and “Kill la Kill”.
