One Fast & Furious Character We Could Live Without: Ramsey

Throughout its ten main films, the Fast and Furious series has introduced a vast array of characters into Dominic Toretto’s extended family. The franchise emphasizes the concept of family beyond blood relations, as it also includes individuals whom Dominic effectively adopted into his close-knit group, considering them all as family. This group includes figures such as Han, Roman, Tej, Ramsey, and others who have temporarily joined or left the circle. However, there’s a peculiarity: once someone becomes a part of it, they seem to be an eternal member because no one ever truly stays deceased.

It appears that the “Fast and Furious” crew has expanded to an almost excessive degree. With Deckard Shaw, Luke Hobbs, Brie Larson’s character Tess, and Gisele Yashar (played by Gal Gadot), it seems Dom’s family has grown so large it may be more than necessary, even redundant in certain instances. One of the main criticisms is that no one seems to stay dead in the “Fast and Furious” series, but reducing some seemingly redundant characters, such as Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey, could address this issue.

Nathalie Emmanuel has excelled in her portrayal of Ramsey, however, there seems to be an issue with her character’s development as it stands. Essentially, Ramsey appears to be another iteration of the character Tej, played by Ludacris since the second installment of the franchise, “2 Fast 2 Furious.” Tej is a fan favorite due to his sharp humor and catchy one-liners. He serves as the primary tech genius, designing the tools they utilize during their missions. In essence, Ramsey functions as an assistant to Tej in the creation of these gadgets.

In the series, there’s a pleasant interplay between Tej and Ramsey, yet they both serve similar functions, mainly assisting each other. This setup appears repetitive, with Ramsey primarily serving as a source of conflict for Tej throughout the films. Although this contributes to the series’ playful atmosphere, it seems that Ramsey is the least crucial member of the family, implying she might be utilized to address ongoing franchise complications.

Death Has Lost Its Meaning In The Franchise

In the Fast and Furious series, since death has lost its impact, there seems to be a need for a permanent character demise to restore significance. For instance, Ramsey, who serves as a second Tej, could potentially die, bridging the gap in audience connection between her and her male counterpart. Nevertheless, such an event is unlikely and arguably unwarranted, particularly if it’s solely for this purpose.

The phrase “women in refrigerators” is a comic book term, referring to the practice of killing a female character for the sake of advancing a male hero’s storyline. It’s particularly problematic when it comes to eliminating one of the few prominent women in the Fast and Furious series, as it seems to emphasize the importance of death at the expense of women. This tactic is especially questionable given that one of the leading actresses has previously criticized the franchise for undervaluing women early on. Michelle Rodriguez even threatened to leave if the treatment of female characters didn’t improve (as reported by L.A. Times).

The persistent disagreements I had with the studio over casting a female voice for Letty and ensuring her character embodied the authentic spirit of a street kid were worth it. If I hadn’t stood firm, I believe Letty might not exist as she does now. I also think that my insistence on maintaining integrity proved crucial in the final outcome.

In another scenario, Gisele’s return in the last film might have been facilitated. Yet, this doesn’t imply that the Fast & Furious series can’t make deaths significant moving forward. In Fast X, it seems Jakob Toretto (John Cena) may have given up his life. To emphasize that death still carries weight, he should remain deceased. Similarly, Jesse and Vince died in the first and fifth films respectively, with Vince’s demise being the most impactful. If the next Fast & Furious film aims for an emotional impact, Tej could meet his end. This would serve to underscore that death once again holds significance.
