One fan-favourite Stranger Things character definitely won’t appear in season 5, it’s confirmed

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have confirmed that Joseph Quinn, who played the popular character Eddie Munson, will not be returning for the show’s final season. They recently told Empire magazine that Eddie is definitely dead, putting an end to fan speculation about his possible return.

Matt Duffer jokingly said he loves how Joe Quinn messes with fans about his character’s fate, but then confirmed the character is definitely dead. He explained that Joe Quinn has been incredibly busy filming other projects – he’s already completed five movies – making it impossible for him to return to Stranger Things. Duffer playfully insisted Quinn is ‘fully under that ground,’ meaning his character is truly gone.

As viewers recall, Eddie sacrificed himself in the final episode of season four. He bravely played his guitar to draw the Demobats away from his friends, but was ultimately overwhelmed by the creatures and died in the Upside Down, with Dustin at his side. It was a particularly emotional moment for fans.

The ending of the scene sparked a lot of fan speculation, with many hoping Eddie’s story isn’t over, given the unpredictable nature of Stranger Things. One popular theory, shared on Reddit, suggests Eddie could be transformed into a vampire, mirroring the character Kas from Dungeons & Dragons.

Kas suffers the same fate as Eddie, being attacked and killed by bats. However, Vecna brings him back to life, and Kas becomes Vecna’s loyal servant in return. Though initially controlled by Vecna, Kas eventually breaks free and, using a special weapon called the Sword of Kas, defeats Vecna permanently.

Another fan suggested that even though Eddie won’t come back to life, we might still see Quinn in memories or past scenes. They pointed out that Vecna could use Eddie’s death to emotionally hurt Dustin, and also Mike and Lucas, who were all close to him.

Even Steve, with whom the character was developing a connection, offers solid reasons within the show’s story to use him in flashbacks or have Vecna take his form. While a full resurrection seems unlikely, anything is possible.

Rumors continued to swirl after Quinn hinted at a possible return. During a Q&A with Facts Comic-Con in April, he was asked about appearing in season five and playfully responded, “I do know, but I’m not telling!” which only intensified speculation among fans.

After gaining widespread recognition for his role in Stranger Things, Quinn has quickly become a major star in Hollywood. He’s landed parts in several large-scale films, including A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), Gladiator II (2024), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).

He’s incredibly busy and will soon be seen as Johnny Storm in the upcoming Marvel superhero movie, Avengers: Doomsday. After that, he’ll play George Harrison in The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to come out in 2026, and the Beatles film is planned for release in 2028.

The last season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix in three separate parts. The first set of episodes will be available starting November 26th, the second on December 25th, and the final part on New Year’s Eve.
