Dave Hughes is recovering well after sustaining injuries from a forceful impact during a charitable Australian Rules Football (AFL) match for retired players.
During the match earlier this month, Hughes experienced several fractured ribs and a collapsed lung due to a severe impact.
Despite being 54 years old, he appeared to be in high spirits on Thursday when he ventured out with his companion Ryan Shelton in Melbourne.
Dave, clad comfortably in a navy sweater and beige trousers, was patiently waiting for an Uber, mere days following his appearance on The Front Bar, where he was seen using a wheelchair.
The stand-up comic accessorized his outfit with a pair of Crocs and carried an iPad while conversing with Ryan on the sidewalk.
The occurrence happened following Dave’s appearance, which seemed like a far cry from his prior vitality, as he was pushed in front of the cameras by a caregiver for a discussion about his sports injury and subsequent hospitalization.
Though I found myself in a serious predicament, I chose not to leave the playing field as I consider myself a brave figure. It was my first experience with cracked ribs,” he explained to the interviewers.
He said, “I could have called for an ambulance, but given my past joke about AFL star Mitch McGovern using one, I knew I wouldn’t be able to follow through with it.
Pondering back on the match where he sustained an injury, Dave playfully spoke of his resilience, saying, “That goal will be remembered forever! I managed it with five cracked ribs!
In my personal experience, I found myself involved in an intense encounter with three esteemed AFL veterans – Andrew Embley, Daniel Gorringe, and Mitch Robinson. The collision was unforgiving, leading to an injury that became apparent as the game progressed. Yet, I chose to press on, playing through the pain, displaying a spirit of determination and resilience.
As a dedicated team member, I was proudly there to rejoice with my comrades after the final whistle, but unfortunately, my health took a turn for the worse throughout the night.
Later on, his spouse took him to the hospital. There, medical professionals assessed the severity of his injuries and initiated treatment.
Approximately a week and a half ago, Dave, who later disclosed that his confrontation with Embley resulted in his most severe wounds, was discharged from the hospital.
‘Still having struggles talking, I just had an endone,’ he told FOX FM.
‘There’s only so much — I can’t go too deep into my lungs, there’s still a hole there.
‘Would I swap? No. I don’t know. I am loving the attention, you know that. You know what I’m like.
Yesterday, while I was in an Uber, sudden pangs of discomfort struck me, causing me to groan. The driver didn’t seem to understand the situation, as I had to tell him, “Please slow down around these turns, you’re taking them too quickly.”

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of protectiveness towards our beloved player, Dave. Despite getting a couple of knocks during the game, he’s not carrying any hard feelings. However, he does believe that Gorringe should have issued a heads-up to prevent such incidents in future matches.
Dave mentioned that out of all the things that occurred, he failed to let me know in advance about his plans.
Brendan Fevola understands the situation well; it’s similar to WWE when you warn before delivering a strong blow. However, he didn’t do so in this instance.
I didn’t realize he was planning to tackle me so aggressively in that ruck. Had I been aware, I would have taken a different path.
Gorringe has since apologised for his knock on Dave in the match.
He expressed his apologies, saying, “I’m really sorry about the small bump I gave you last night, which seems to have resulted in quite a bit of injury, as you appear quite painful right now.
‘How brave were you, big fella, to continue with the game… I’m thinking of you.’
The All Stars finished with bragging rights after defeating Victoria by eight points.
