Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe takes brutal swipe at The Amazing Race rival Peter Helliar live on The Project: ‘Your wife carried you the whole show’
As a devoted fan of reality TV competitions, I must admit, I was thrilled to see Ian Thorpe and Peter Helliar go head-to-head on The Amazing Race Celebrity Edition. Their rivalry, fueled by good-natured banter and playful jabs, has added an exciting twist to this season’s competition.
On Sunday evening, the atmosphere grew tense on The Project when Ian Thorpe delivered a sharp critique of his TV counterpart, Peter Helliar, during their conversation.
This year, the duo are taking part in The Amazing Race Celebrity Edition. Filming concluded in June, featuring Peter along with his spouse Bridget, as well as Christian Miranda, a friend of Ian’s.
It appears the Olympic swimmer, aged 41, was not done voicing disagreements with the comedian, who is 49, as he alleged that Peter allowed his spouse Bridget to handle most of the tasks during their TV competition.
During the interview, the radio host aimed to maintain a cordial atmosphere, inquiring about Ian’s thoughts on the upcoming episode of The Amazing Race, which was scheduled to air immediately following The Project.
Peter confessed to the sports commentator that tonight’s episode seemed like the most challenging day so far in the competition.
‘I was laying bricks up in the mountains where the air is thin and the temperature was about 40 degrees. Was it just as tough for you as it was for me?’
Immediately, Ian swiftly reacted by firing up at Peter, vocalizing the events where the radio host retreated, allowing his spouse Bridget to tackle the challenging duty.
He mentioned, “It was challenging, but I have a feeling that not many things give you trouble. I observed throughout that your spouse handled most of the tasks.
Behind Peter Helliar stands an exceptional woman.
Peter attempted to make light of the situation by saying, “Hey, it’s no joke, I did marry a fantastic woman… But let’s not go overboard with compliments. I secretly hope she’ll be the one taking me to the Logies next year, honestly.
In the course of the program, I found myself disclosing an interesting tidbit – it seemed that Christian, a fellow contestant and swimmer, had lent a helping hand to Ian by carrying his bag at one instance. This was my tactic to gain an edge over him in the segment.
He remarked, “Given the recent episode, it seems you’re not being entirely truthful. I believe I spotted your friend Christian carrying your backpack and the two items as well.
‘So if we’re going to start this mate, you won’t like where it’s going.’
However, Ian was prepared with a sharp retort, responding: “Alright, buddy, let’s get this party started, let’s get this party started. Your partner did all the heavy lifting for the entire performance.
This year, both Peter and Ian were part of a stellar ensemble, which included talents such as Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Luke McGregor, and Jett Kenny.
The Amazing Race will return to Channel Ten and 10Play at 7:30pm on Monday night.
