- Publishers raised several issues including qualification, revenue sharing, schedule, and more.
For enthusiasts of electronic sports (esports), the highly anticipated Olympic Esports Games has allegedly been postponed due to technical difficulties. As initially planned for 2025, this event may now occur in either 2026 or 2027, according to SportBusiness. However, officials have yet to confirm an exact date; they will soon disclose the updated schedule.
Olympic Esports Games 2025 had to be delayed as the Organizers needed more time
As a passionate fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about the Olympic Esports Games 2025. Recently, SportBusiness shed light on some crucial factors contributing to its delay. It turns out that both the game publishers and organizers require ample time to meticulously prepare for this grand event. The original plan was to host it in Saudi Arabia, but there were a couple of hurdles along the way. Firstly, they needed more time to decide on the specific games to be included. Secondly, establishing a robust financial mechanism proved challenging.

Additionally, the event failed to disclose specifics about its location and a comprehensive schedule. Despite being organized by Saudi Arabia, the publishers expressed apprehension over multiple concerns. It seemed there was no clear plan for the qualification of participating teams.
Since esports teams operate within organizations, it left some ambiguity about how individual players would be involved. Consequently, the organizers found themselves in a position where they had to plan and clarify all details, including a workable roadmap, before announcing anything to ensure everyone was on board.
IOC and IESF are working together to come up with a proper plan
Since the event seems to be postponed for quite some time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Esports Federation (IESF) are collaborating diligently to find a viable solution. In recent times, esports has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity.
We’ve attended major esports tournaments organized by individual game publishers and also large-scale events such as the Esports World Cup. Yet, the most spectacular event was about to make its presence felt. The Olympic Esports Games 2025, albeit delayed, is set to leave a lasting impression.
