In an upcoming episode of “Who Do You Think You Are?”, Olly Murs uncovered a heart-wrenching family secret concerning his grandparent’s ancestry.
The forty-year-old vocalist appears on the latest installment of the BBC program to revisit his roots in Latvia and explore his heritage.
In the show, there are some truly astounding unveilings. Yet, Olly found that his family background was significantly more intricate than he had ever envisioned.
It was revealed to him that his grandfather, Eddie, was born as a result of an extramarital relationship and was later relocated to England following the Soviet Union’s occupation of Latvia. They established their new home only a short distance from where Olly originates, which is Essex.
However, tragically, it was uncovered that Olly’s great-grandmother had been left behind in Latvia and subsequently imprisoned in a Soviet labor camp. Despite his prolonged efforts to locate her, he learned of her passing in 1988, after she spent years searching for her own son.
Before delivering the tragic news to his father Peter, Olly first went to pay respects at her grave, causing Peter to weep.)
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: “One of the most important requests my father ever made was to find out where his loved one was laid to rest. It was a profound and emotional moment for me when I could finally provide him with some closure.
‘It was quite emotional to see dad cry and get upset – I’ve never seen my dad cry, actually.
“It seemed to me that his emotional state indicated I had achieved something extraordinary for him and his family – something that brought him comfort and a sense of connection to Latvia.
Speaking to The Sun, Olly admitted the programme helped him and his father connect in a new way.
He mentioned that their bond has been stronger than ever before – they share a passion for football and music, yet he can relate to him being a bit of a character, much like himself.
Discovering this topic allowed us to establish a unique connection, something I hadn’t experienced with you previously.
‘I was able to unlock some doors that my dad had been refused before and wasn’t able to unlock.’
This year, Olly shared some personal details about his family situation when he disclosed that he’s drifted apart from his identical twin brother, Ben.
In 2009, Olly opted to participate in The X Factor’s semi-finals instead of attending his brother’s wedding, and ever since then, the two haven’t had any contact.
In the time period after their unexpected parting, it became clear that he found it challenging to manage by himself.
He told The Times: ‘When you’ve been in the womb with someone, you struggle with loneliness. I had to deal with it when my twin and I went on our separate lives.
‘I was desperate to be around people, could not sit in a room alone.’
He added: ‘When I was single for three years, I had to learn to like my own company. That’s when I met Amelia.’
Despite Olly not providing any hint about reconciling with his brother in the future, he disclosed that his primary ambition is to excel as a devoted husband and loving father.
He stated: “My objective in life is to excel as a remarkable spouse and parent – that’s where my path leads. I’d be thrilled if my profession carries on smoothly, but once you get married and have children, one simply aspires to be exceptional for them.
