Olivia Wilde and Natalie Portman showed their support for immigration rights at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, wearing “ICE OUT” pins following the fatal shooting of a nurse by a US border patrol agent in Minneapolis this weekend.
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse from Minnesota, was fatally shot on Saturday during a confrontation with federal agents.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated in a press conference that Pretti became violent during the incident, and also asked why he was armed with a legally owned weapon.
She explained that Pretti had interfered with police work, assaulted officers, and was carrying a weapon along with a large amount of ammunition.
According to sources who spoke with the Daily Mail, Pretti was allegedly shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
Following numerous celebrity statements on social media, Olivia and Natalie voiced their opinions at the Utah film festival, visibly displaying their support with their badges.
Oh my gosh, Olivia looked absolutely stunning! She paired her official badge with this gorgeous lace dress – so chic! And Natalie, she always goes for classic sophistication, rocking a really sharp brown and black coat. They both just… get it, you know?
Following the weekend’s events, celebrities like Mandy Moore and Ariana Grande publicly expressed their anger and disappointment.
Shortly after the shooting, Moore shared a New York Times article on her Instagram story with the headline: ‘Federal Agents Shoot And Kill A Person In Minneapolis, Officials Say.’
The actress then added her own message at the bottom which read, ‘We have eyeballs.
We watched the video, and it shows they killed the wrong person. I’m really worried about how things will play out, because this is a very dangerous situation.
Ariana Grande shared a post from New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani about a recent shooting in Minneapolis. The mayor’s post highlighted that the shooting occurred while tens of thousands of people across the US were protesting against what they see as violent and unchecked actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
‘ICE terrorizes our cities. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE.’
Chrissy Teigen also shared a tweet from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her Instagram Stories.
The U.S. representative claimed that the government is responsible for the deaths of American citizens and is destroying the Constitution and our rights, urging people to fight back.
Democratic senators should refuse to approve funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this week. They should also deploy the National Guard. We have the ability, and the responsibility, to put a stop to this situation.
Chrissy Teigen, wife of singer John Legend, shared a post from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) on X, stating, ‘We must protect Americans from oppression.’
Just two weeks after shooting a mother in the face without facing repercussions, the Department of Homeland Security shot another person in broad daylight. They are now seeking our support through our votes to continue operating as they have been, and we must not give it to them. Every Senator should vote against their policies.
Chrissy Teigen also shared a post from journalist Molly Jong-Fast on X, where Jong-Fast expressed frustration with the administration’s denials of things that were clearly captured on video.
Olivia Rodrigo shared a message on Instagram Saturday, saying she found ICE’s actions unacceptable but believes people have the power to make a difference. She expressed her support for Minnesota.
Busy Phillips reacted to the shooting with a passionate Instagram post, expressing her frustration and grief. She wrote that senseless killings will continue as long as those in power are able to deceive, and urged her followers to contact their elected officials.
The actress urged people to protest and stop supporting businesses and individuals connected to this issue. She also encouraged voting out officials who support it, admitting she felt helpless and didn’t know what else to do.
She later questioned how so many people could fail to recognize they were supporting the wrong cause.
It’s baffling how people can’t see the clear harm caused by selfishness and a relentless pursuit of control, especially when it’s happening right before their eyes. It’s hard to believe they don’t understand.
Phillips finished by saying he wasn’t sure if people simply didn’t care, but regardless, he believed the situation was fundamentally flawed. He expressed confidence that they had the strength in numbers to persevere and continue making their voices heard.
The actor from White Chicks also included other posts in her story, including one shared by the Instagram user @quentin.quarantino.
The post featured a picture of Alex Pretti and stated that the 37-year-old American citizen, who was executed today, was an ICU nurse dedicated to helping critically ill veterans.
‘He died protecting a fellow citizen. An American hero was executed in the streets today.’
Phillips also shared a post from @MoveOn stating that someone died today due to actions by Trump’s ICE, claiming it was a murder.
The actress also reposted a 2020 image of Kylie Rittenhouse that was originally shared by @isaiahmartin, following the shooting of Jacob Blake.
Martin also pointed out that Kyle Rittenhouse attended a similar protest and was praised as a hero by many Republicans.
Chrishell Stause, from the show Selling Sunset, shared a post on her Instagram Stories highlighting the number of undocumented immigrants in Texas (2.1 million) and Florida (1.6 million).
Minnesota has 130,000 residents. It’s important to remember this isn’t about immigration, and it never has been.
Stause also shared her reaction, calling a recent video showing an ICE-involved death ‘stomach-turning’ and ‘insane’.
Amelia Gray Hamlin posted a bikini selfie with a message protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), writing ‘F ICE’ on the photo and raising her middle finger in the mirror’s reflection.
Julianne Hough shared a photo originally posted by Evan Ross Katz, showing Pretti posing near some woods.
Oh my gosh, seeing that picture with the quote just destroyed me. It said, “He wanted to be helpful, to help humanity and have a career that was a force of good in the world.” It’s just… it perfectly captures everything about him! He wasn’t about fame or money, he genuinely wanted to make a difference. It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once, honestly. I just keep re-reading it!
The dancer reacted to the post on her Instagram story by simply adding a broken heart emoji.
Kaia Gerber reposted a quote from Pretti’s neighbor – which had also been shared by Evan Ross Katz.
Our neighbor, Alex, was someone who stood up for what he believed in. I want people to remember him as the activist who joined 50,000 others yesterday in a peaceful, large-scale protest and general strike.
He was an ICU nurse – just a working person like me, and a vital part of our community, alongside the immigrants and others who make our neighborhood what it is.
The ICE agents operating in our neighborhood are causing harm and haven’t improved my safety at all.
Halsey also reposted the same tweet shared by NYC mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.
The singer also shared James Talarico’s post where he typed, ‘They shot Renee Good in the face.
Liam Ramos has been kidnapped, and a man was just killed publicly. We demand those responsible be identified, brought to justice, and that this kind of covert policing end immediately.
Maren Morris, a country music singer, shared a video clip of the deadly incident that happened in Minneapolis on Saturday to her Instagram stories.
She continued, ‘If you’re disturbed by what you see, please don’t scroll. This video shows the perspective of the woman in pink as she films this man’s execution.’
Christie Brinkley posted about the event on her Instagram, writing, ‘This is happening now! Someone was killed while defending our Constitution.’
‘This administration has blood on their hands! Peace Now in the USA! ICE OUT!’
Hilary Swank is another celebrity who spoke out on Saturday by sharing a post uploaded by the ACLU.
The post simply read: ‘ICE OUT OF MINNEAPOLIS NOW ACLU.’
Justin Theroux shared a video on Instagram originally posted by @redcellobservations, featuring Pretti working in the intensive care unit at a Veterans Affairs hospital.
The actor typed out underneath the clip: ‘Rest in Peace Alex Pretti.’
On Saturday, Pretti’s family released a statement saying he was killed by “violent and cowardly criminals.”
Alex was a compassionate person who deeply loved his family and friends. As an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital, he also dedicated himself to caring for American veterans.
Alex had a strong desire to improve the world, and though he won’t be here to witness the results of his efforts, he truly was a hero – a title I don’t use often.
‘However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.
I can’t even begin to tell you how furious I am! They’re twisting everything, lying about my son, Alex! It’s absolutely disgusting. Everyone needs to know the truth: Alex was not armed when those awful ICE thugs – Trump’s thugs, really – attacked him. They’re trying to make it look like he was a threat, but it’s a complete fabrication! It’s horrifying and I won’t let them get away with this!
He’s holding his phone in one hand and has his other hand raised as if to shield a woman who was pushed by ICE officers, all while being sprayed with pepper spray.
They concluded with, ‘Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.’
Although the family initially blamed ICE for the shooting, it was actually DHS officers who fired the shots.
On Saturday night, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that reports suggest the man shot by agents, Pretti, had shown a weapon to them beforehand.
But footage taken of the killing appears to dispute her claims.
One agent was seen removing what appeared to be Pretti’s legally-owned handgun from his waistband.
Pretti loved spending time outdoors and often went on adventures with his dog, Joule, a Catahoula Leopard dog who sadly passed away recently.
He also joined demonstrations after Renee Good was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on January 7th.
Pretti, a US citizen originally from Illinois, had no criminal history, just like Good. His family stated he’d only ever had a few minor traffic violations and no other run-ins with the police.
Oh my gosh, I just heard the most frustrating thing! His parents, way out in Colorado, actually told him to be careful while protesting! Can you believe it? Like, of course he’s going to be careful, but it’s just…ugh. They don’t get it, you know? They’re so worried about him, which is sweet, I guess, but it feels like they’re minimizing everything he’s fighting for. It just makes me so mad that they’d even say that to him!
According to family, Pretti legally owned a handgun and had a permit to carry it hidden, but they stated they never actually saw him carrying the weapon.
The family found out about the shooting when a reporter from the Associated Press contacted them.
