Olivia Colman’s underseen comedy is now available to watch on Netflix
As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of cinematic escapades, I must say that both “Joyride” and “Wicked Little Letters,” now available on Netflix, offer unique and captivating narratives that cater to different tastes.
Upon the arrival of “Wicked Little Letters” on Netflix, another comedic title featuring Olivia Colman can also be found streaming on the platform.
Back in 2022, I found myself immersed in an engaging game titled “Joyride.” In this captivating narrative, I took on the role of Joy, a character famously portrayed by The Crown’s stellar cast. My journey began as I prepared for a taxi ride, a significant step in a heart-wrenching tale where I was about to entrust my newborn baby to the care of a cherished friend.
Yet, Joy’s trip takes a turn for the worse as a taxi she hops into gets seized by a mourning teenager, Mully (Charlie Reid), who had recently lost his mother, Rita, to cancer.
Regardless of their original differences, they eventually developed an unconventional bond, aiding one another as they confronted the profound issues that brought them together in the first place.
Under the guidance of director Emer Reynolds, Joyride features Lochlann O’Mearáin as Mully’s father James. The film has earned an audience approval rating of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics have given it a slightly lower score of 50%.
Currently, the Netflix lineup in the UK and Ireland has been expanded with the addition of “Wicked Little Letters,” a film featuring the talents of Colman and Jessie Buckley.
Inspired by an astonishing true event involving poison pen letters, this raucous comedy unfolds the quarrel between neighbors Edith (Colman) and Rose (Buckley). The story unfolds when Edith receives a string of offensive, anonymous letters, which she suspects originate from Rose.
In an interview earlier this year, Colman shared with Digital Spy his experiences during the production of ‘Wicked Little Letters’, using the term “cathartic” to describe the process of including curse words.
She stated, “From a young age, you’re often warned that it’s wrong, but it doesn’t cause harm unless targeted at someone else. However, isn’t it true that what we’re discussing here is actually causing harm to others?”
“Experiencing relief, it feels as though you’re standing atop a hill, yelling out your feelings, and feeling an immense lightness. Similarly, after boxing with a punching bag, there’s a sense of accomplishment. This sensation is known as catharsis – a release and purification of strong or repressed emotions.”
I’ve found throughout my life that certain choice words have the power to capture emotions more effectively than any other. Swearing, for me, is a quick and succinct way of expressing intense feelings, especially when I’m feeling frustrated or angry. It has become an integral part of my vocabulary, reflecting both my upbringing and life experiences.
Joyride and Wicked Little Letters are streaming on Netflix.
