Olivia Colman’s forgotten horror movie is on TV tonight
As a long-time admirer of Olivia Colman’s captivating performances, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for her latest TV appearance in “Them That Follow.” While her Oscar-winning roles in blockbusters like “The Favourite” have left an indelible mark on the silver screen, it’s always a delight to discover lesser-known gems that showcase her exceptional talent.
This weekend, you’ll find Olivia Colman gracing the big screen again with the film titled “Paddington in Peru“, and if you’re interested, one of her less frequently watched films will be shown on television.
The Oscar-winning actor stars in Them That Follow, a 2019 horror movie set in a small and isolated religious community in the Appalachian Mountains.
To catch the movie on TV, you’ll need to stay awake past your bedtime as it is scheduled for broadcast at 2:30 am on Channel 4.
Alternatively, you could hold off until Monday 11th to watch it on Channel 4’s streaming platform, or go ahead and purchase or rent the movie from Amazon, iTunes, or Microsoft Store immediately.
Under the guidance of directors Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage, the narrative unfolds about a woman who is striving to conceal an unplanned pregnancy within a secluded Pentecostal community.
She is being courted by a parishioner, but the father of the child is her former lover. If the secret is revealed, they would be in serious trouble not only with their families, but with the whole town.
Unfortunate for the community, their leader – the pastor – who wields significant influence, employs a traditional method to identify sinners: He encourages his followers to handle poisonous serpents.
Those who get bitten are condemned, while those spared are “cleansed.”
Following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019, the movie titled “Them That Follow” garnered a fairly neutral response from reviewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored a rating of 59% based on 92 reviews, indicating a mixed reception overall.
The film “Them That Follow” fails to fully convey the intense spirituality of its location, but the dedicated acting by the cast results in a somewhat fulfilling exploration of their characters.
The performance of Olivia Colman in the film received acclaim from many critics, which comes as no surprise given her renowned acting career. From her memorable detective role on Broadchurch to her starring roles in critically-acclaimed and award-winning films such as The Favourite and The Lost Daughter, this British actor has solidified her place as a well-known figure in the entertainment industry.
Them That Follow airs on Channel 4 at 2.50am (early Monday).
