Olivia Colman reveals she keeps her Oscar hidden behind a book on a shelf because she thinks it’s ‘showy offy’ to have statuette on display

The celebrated British actress received the highest honor for her craft in 2019, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Six years after winning the Oscar, Olivia Colman has shared that she doesn’t display the award prominently in her home. Instead, she keeps it tucked away on a bookshelf.

The celebrated 51-year-old actress won an award for her role as Queen Anne in ‘The Favourite.’ Her acceptance speech was particularly memorable – both funny and moving – and she began by sharing that she once worked as a cleaner, often daydreaming about moments like this.

Despite winning a prestigious award, the celebrity admitted on The Great Christmas Bake Off that she keeps it hidden away, worried it would come across as boastful.

The Channel 4 holiday special brought back the cast of the beloved sitcom Peep Show. Olivia was joined by David Mitchell (Mark), Matt King (Super Hans), Isy Suttie (Dobby), and Sophie Winkleman (Big Suze) for the reunion.

During a reunion show where the friends shared memories of their comedy series, which aired from 2003 to 2015, host Alison Hammond playfully inquired about Olivia’s Academy Award.

The Crown star confessed: ‘It’s now on a bookshelf, but hidden behind a book‘, stunning Alison.

When asked why she concealed the valuable award, Olivia simply stated she thought it was too flashy. Alison confessed she would have proudly put it on display right outside her home.

Despite all her success, the actress known for Broadchurch admitted she wasn’t as excited about her other awards. She happily declared she’d be sure to display her Bake Off trophy with pride.

Olivia won the baking competition after impressing the judges with her beautiful stained-glass biscuits, a perfectly made turkey pie, and a stunning apple and cinnamon cake.

After winning and receiving the special holiday plate, Paul joked that it should take precedence over all his other awards, like the Oscars.

But the actress insisted: ‘I will! This will be the only one I have on display.’

The mother of three admitted her Oscar was only shown off for a year before she put it away in a cupboard.

While on the Graham Norton Show in December 2022, Graham Norton playfully asked Olivia Colman, “So, where do you keep your Oscar?”

Olivia admitted hesitantly, ‘It’s in the cupboard,’ while Graham asked if the cupboard had a glass door.

But the celebrity responded, ‘No, displaying it feels a little showy. I prefer to keep it in the cupboard so I can playfully reveal it and say, “Hello!”‘

I’ve always admired her directness. She explained that initially, it’s okay to address something when it first comes up, but after about a year, you really need to move on and focus on what you’re doing now. Basically, acknowledge it, then let it go and keep working hard – that’s her advice, and I always try to follow it.

Earlier this year, Olivia shared that she’d had to move her award—a small golden statue—to the bookshelf because the cupboard where she was storing it had become damp.

In an August interview on the SmartLess podcast, the star of ‘The Father’ revealed that her handyman was the one who actually saved her Oscar trophy.

She remembered thinking it was a bit boastful to display things at home, so she hadn’t put anything on show. The item had been stored in a cupboard in the living room, but they recently found out the cupboard was getting damp.

Our house is very old – the front dates back to 1600 – and while it’s charming, it does have a bit of a dampness problem. Our friend Darren, who’s skilled at carpentry, repairs, and painting, took a look inside a cupboard and was shocked by how damp it was.

He asked me to remove it, and now I keep it on a bookshelf, hidden behind another book. That way, I know it’s there and can still greet it.
