Disney+ is now streaming the dark comedy The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. The film is a modern take on the classic 1980s movie The War of the Roses, and follows a seemingly perfect couple as their marriage falls apart in increasingly chaotic fashion.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Coleman play Theo and Ivy Rose, a seemingly perfect couple with twins. However, their marriage unravels as Theo’s architecture career struggles while Ivy’s restaurant thrives, revealing a darker, more destructive side to both of them.
The film also boasts a fantastic supporting cast, including Ncuti Gatwa (known from Doctor Who), Kate McKinnon (Barbie), Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Allison Janney (The Diplomat), and Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Earlier this year, Digital Spy awarded the film four stars, calling it “one of the funniest movies of 2025.” They also praised the performances of two of Britain’s leading actors, saying their witty back-and-forth makes the film a must-see for viewers.
The Seattle Times praised The Roses as “an excellent version of the movie it aims to be.” TIME Magazine noted that the film is both funny and surprisingly poignant.

Honestly, the biggest reason I’m excited about this movie is definitely Colman and Cumberbatch. I read a review in The Observer that said they have amazing chemistry – the reviewer actually said we root for them as a couple just as much as when they’re fighting! That sounds incredible, and I can’t wait to see them together on screen.
Meanwhile, Cumberbatch will next be seen in Guy Ritchie’s all-star ensemble comedy Wife & Dog.
Although details about the movie are scarce, Benedict Cumberbatch has shared that he’ll be portraying a character unlike those he typically plays, comparing it to the tough, action-hero roles often seen with actors like Tom Hardy and Jason Statham.
