"Old Man Orton" is a great gimmick for Randy Orton

As a lifelong WWE fan who’s witnessed Randy Orton’s meteoric rise since his debut, I can confidently say that the Viper has truly outdone himself with this “Old Man” persona. It’s like watching a fine wine age gracefully, except instead of getting better with time, Orton is evolving into an even more captivating character.

Randy Orton has been a mainstay in WWE for over two decades, and it seems almost sacrilegious to imagine him performing elsewhere. After his comeback at Survivor Series 2023, Orton has been enjoying a successful stint with the company. On SmackDown, he’s assumed the role of an experienced leader, a part that he’s executing effectively thus far. The unexpected transformation of Randy Orton into “Veteran Orton” is a career path that many didn’t anticipate, but it’s one that he’s excelling in without a doubt.

Randy Orton is established and respected in the WWE, with a long-term contract allowing him to work whenever and however he chooses. His eventual induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and recognition as a legend are all but certain upon his retirement. At age 44, it seems that retirement may be approaching more quickly than before. The WWE is effectively utilizing Orton during this stage of his career.

In this scenario, Orton finds himself ideally situated amidst the confrontation between Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes. He’s acting as a “peacemaker” between the two, but it won’t be long before the ex-champion takes action against Rhodes, as is typical of Orton. Given that both Owens and Orton have reasons to be angry with Rhodes for joining forces with Roman Reigns, but for now, Orton is striving to resolve the issue. This stance reinforces the idea that he’s evolved into a more mature, influential figure within the locker room.

In a surprising move, Randy Orton moved down to NXT and excelled in his role. During their main event match, when Je’Von Evans slipped up in a crucial, climactic moment, Orton graciously picked up the young performer and offered comfort. Over a decade prior, he had harshly criticized Kofi Kingston, which negatively impacted his career for years. However, this time around, many online viewers noticed his growth and commended him for it.

Throughout Randy Orton’s impressive 25-year career, his in-ring style hasn’t undergone significant change, yet fans continue to appreciate his performances. The “Old Man” Orton persona has been a hit thus far and could potentially rank among the best of his long-standing career.
