Old Guard 3: Shocking Franchise Star Won’t Return

Resurrection.

The intrigue surrounding the sequel lies in the fact that Andy, a character from The Old Guard, has lost her immortality. This development heightens the tension as she faces a formidable adversary in the upcoming film. With an impressive ensemble including stars like Theron and Thurman, The Old Guard 2 promises high-octane action and emotionally charged moments, all driven by an engaging narrative under the direction of Victoria Mahoney. However, recent reports indicate that Mahoney won’t be involved when The Old Guard 3 is released.

In an interview with TopMob, Victoria Mahoney, director of “The Old Guard 2”, hinted at her potential involvement in “The Old Guard 3”. However, she mentioned that she is currently not part of the discussions and someone else will likely take charge, promising a fresh and thrilling direction for the series.

Assuming there’s ‘The Old Guard 3,’ a sequel we all eagerly anticipate. How long might fans have to wait for it? On a speculative note, if such a film were to be made, what aspects of these characters would you like to delve deeper into from your perspective?

Victoria Mahoney stated, “I’m not present in this room or part of the conversation about whether there will be another [project]. The lengthy production of this film has taken me away from other projects I am committed to, so for the next six to seven years, I’ll be working on those other tasks. Consequently, someone else will step up to lead in an inspiring and thrilling manner, and I can’t wait to see what they have planned. I trust it will be fantastic, enjoyable, and crafted with thoughtfulness towards the audience.

Although it’s disappointing that Mahoney won’t be back to potentially direct the third installment, this opens up an opportunity for the dramatic series to collaborate with different filmmakers, broadening its creative scope.

In a shift from previous directing roles primarily in television shows like “Suits LA”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, and “The Morning Show”, Victoria Mahoney will make her debut as a feature film director with the upcoming release of “The Old Guard 2”. Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the original “The Old Guard”, has been replaced for this sequel. The second installment of “The Old Guard” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 2, 2025, and features an all-star cast that includes Charlize Theron (previously seen as the MCU’s Clea in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

How The Old Guard 2 Could Set up a Threequel

In “The Old Guard 2,” the lore surrounding the immortal characters will grow with the introduction of Henry Golding’s Tuah, an immortal older than Andy. In a recent interview with TopMob, Golding shared that one of his main aspirations for his character in “The Old Guard 2” is to provide more insights into the mysteries surrounding the immortals, addressing questions viewers might have had.

Henry Golding: After viewing the initial film, many viewers were left curious about the immortals, such as: Where do they come from? Why do they exist? These are questions that Tuah has been contemplating for centuries. As one of the oldest immortals, he is now determined to uncover these mysteries and provide answers.

Only Andy seems to be aware of his own existence, and it’s crucial at this juncture where the immortal’s very existence is on the line that he steps forward, providing as many details as he can.

He is adjusting to a new reality where he’s no longer a lone figure and is now part of this collective, this family. There seems to be some apprehension about whether he will be accepted or if he’ll fit in with everyone else, but I believe he eventually finds his niche and his purpose because each member contributes significantly within the group. So, it appears that his main concern is whether he can belong.

In all likelihood, The Old Guard 2 may not provide answers to every question about the immortals, and some of these remaining mysteries might persist in the event of a hypothetical third installment.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but anticipate the challenges that lie ahead in “The Old Guard 2” with the formidable villain, Discord. Having forfeited my immortality in the previous installment, I find myself squarely in the thick of things. If the story unfolds as it appears to be heading, I might find myself making the ultimate sacrifice to protect my team and vanquish our formidable adversary. This selfless act could potentially open the door for a new leader among us, perhaps Kiki Layne’s Nile or Marwan Kenzari’s Joe, who has proven himself as the backbone of our group, to step up and take charge in the event of a third film.

In the upcoming movie “The Old Guard 3”, we delve into an intriguing plot point: the ominous resurfacing of Andy’s former ally-turned-foe, Quynh (Ngô Thanh Vân), who has been imprisoned underwater for centuries. It’s been confirmed that she will join forces with Discord in the sequel. However, it’s plausible that “The Old Guard 2” lays the groundwork for Quynh to transform into the main antagonist. If the third installment is greenlit, her reign of terror could unfold.
