Most popular sitcoms, including The Big Bang Theory, originally aired on traditional network television before becoming available through streaming services. The show, a funny and engaging comedy about a group of nerdy scientist friends like Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, ran for 12 seasons on CBS. Many viewers may have forgotten that early in its first season, the show took a long break. Now, Jim Parsons, one of the show’s stars, is sharing how that break ultimately changed the direction of the entire series.
Jim Parsons has had a successful career beyond his time on the popular sitcom, but he’s still best known for playing Sheldon Cooper – a role that’s earned him a lot of awards. Because of this, people often ask him about his work on The Big Bang Theory and his voiceover work on the show’s spin-off, Young Sheldon. Even though he’s been involved with Chuck Lorre’s shows for almost twenty years, Parsons recently told Us Weekly that one of his most vivid memories is from the first season of The Big Bang Theory, when the cast learned the show had been temporarily cancelled.
I’ll never forget when we were just getting into the first season. After around seven or eight episodes, the writers went on strike, and we were told production was halting indefinitely. Honestly, it wasn’t about being worried about our jobs, it was something much bigger. We were all really falling in love with the show and truly believed we had something special. The strike felt like a real threat that it could all be over before we even got a chance to really shine, and that was what upset us the most.
I remember when the writers went on strike back in 2007! It was all about getting a fair share of the money from things like DVD sales and, believe it or not, the very first steps of online streaming – it seemed like science fiction at the time! The strike started just a couple months after The Big Bang Theory premiered, around the beginning of November, and it went on for a full 100 days. It was a tough time, but they were fighting for what was right.
When The Big Bang Theory first started, Jim Parsons and the other actors didn’t realize it would become such a long-running hit, lasting over ten seasons. Parsons recalls the cast felt hopeful, but they worried a writers’ strike early on could hurt the show’s popularity and even lead to cancellation. For many of them, including Kunal Nayyar – who only had a year left on his visa when he was cast as Raj – this series was their major opportunity.

It’s doubtful The Big Bang Theory would have succeeded if it had premiered today. The current streaming landscape and the 2023 writers’ strike—which mirrored the 2007-2008 strike—were tough on many shows, and it’s possible it wouldn’t have survived.
Fortunately, The Big Bang Theory didn’t experience those issues, and Jim Parsons explained that being on a major network during the strike actually benefited the show.
Things actually worked out really well for us. More people discovered the show through reruns, and when it returned, it became even more popular – something we didn’t foresee at the time. Looking back, even after just a few episodes, we all felt like we were creating something special with real potential. It easily could have been derailed by the usual challenges of the industry, but thankfully, we got lucky.
I think the initial episodes were enough to really grab viewers. They built up the story and characters well, leaving people wanting to see more. After months of re-watching old episodes, fans were excited for new content once production resumed. The show’s popularity has continued to grow, and with two successful spin-offs and another one planned, it’s clear this wasn’t just a lucky break!
Although Jim Parsons says he’s finished playing Sheldon after the Young Sheldon finale, I’m waiting to see if that’s really true. I wouldn’t be shocked if some of the original Big Bang Theory cast members made appearances in the new series, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, which will again star Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom and his comic book store. Either way, I’m happy Parsons and the rest of the team were able to stay on television for so long and become a lasting part of pop culture.
Before the new show starring Stuart airs in 2026, you can watch all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory on HBO. Jim Parsons’ award-winning performance as Sheldon is a highlight and makes the series definitely worth checking out.
