OG Avengers Unite in Epic ‘Doomsday’ Showdown – 6 Phase 1 Legends Return!
Approximately six main characters from Marvel Cinematic Universe, who first appeared during Phase 1, are expected to continue their roles in the Avengers: Doomsday film scheduled for 2026.
Compared to the previous four Avengers films, Doomsday is projected to surpass them significantly due to one of the largest ensembles in comic book movie history. In this film, audiences will witness a unique gathering of teams that haven’t worked together before, featuring the Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and legacy X-Men.
In addition to characters debuting from the Multiverse Saga, the cast of Avengers: Doomsday will feature actors who played key roles in laying the groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
6 MCU Phase 1 Stars Confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast
According to Marvel Studios announcements and industry news sources, six actors from the original phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have been confirmed to appear in the 2026 film “Avengers: Doomsday.
Chris Hemsworth
The formal unveiling of the cast for “Avengers: Doomsday” began with one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s founding superheroes, Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Hemsworth first appeared as the Thunder God in the 2011 film “Thor,” which was the fourth movie in the MCU’s initial phase.
For the past 14 years, he has appeared in a total of 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. This includes four solo Thor movies, four Avengers films, a cameo in Doctor Strange’s post-credits scene, an archival appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), and a voice role in What If…?.
Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal in Doomsday, however it is titled, stands out because his character’s storyline is anticipated to continue immediately after 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The latter film concluded with him adopting Gorr the God Butcher’s daughter, Love, and deciding to return to Earth to safeguard New Asgard.
I, as a devoted fan, can confidently say that the impending “Doomsday” scenario is expected to showcase the primary timeline Thor we’ve grown fond of since his debut on Asgard in 2011. In this role, he will be one of the seasoned Avengers members. However, encounters with certain Variants and heroes from other universes are bound to take him by surprise.
Tom Hiddleston
In the upcoming scenes, we will witness a heartwarming get-together featuring Chris Hemsworth and his popular screen partner, Tom Hiddleston. Known for his mischievous antics, Hiddleston’s character Loki Laufeyson will reappear, promising another thrilling performance. The character first appeared in the 2011 film Thor, where he made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the trickster god. Since then, both Hemsworth and Hiddleston have won over fans with their unforgettable portrayals.
Quantumania’s end credits scene. As such, by 2026, Tom Hiddleston will have acted in 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
Following the demise of his Earth-616 Counterpart in “Avengers: Infinity War“, the Loki portrayed in “Avengers: Endgame” became the central figure in the Disney+ series, “Loki“. By the conclusion of these two seasons, Hiddleston’s character evolved into the God of Stories, preserving the Sacred Timeline with his own hands.
In the minimum, the Loki Variant is anticipated to appear in the movie “Doomsday“. It’s likely that he will explain the principles of the Multiverse and alternate timelines to the heroes. The film might also introduce other malevolent versions of him from different time periods, but the Loki Variant is expected to be the main focus of his character.
Sebastian Stan
Sebastian Stan brings a unique touch to the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday,” being one of the rare characters who have been part of all six stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This talented actor, originally from Romania, made his MCU debut as James Buchanan Barnes in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.
Over time, Stan’s character will be known as the Winter Soldier, having starred in 12 MCU movies and Disney+ series. These appearances span across multiple productions, such as all four Captain America films, the final two Avengers installments, and a leading role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This is just a part of his extensive repertoire.
Stan made a brief appearance in “Captain America: Brave New World” in 2025. His next role before the movie “Doomsday” will be seen this summer in “Thunderbolts,” which is the final film of Phase 5. In this storyline, he plays a U.S. Senator, leading a group of reformed villains/antiheroes to combat a global threat, under the leadership of Lewis Pullman’s Sentry.
In the movie “Doomday,” Stan’s exact part isn’t clear yet, but given that many of the main characters from “Doomday” are set to appear alongside him in “Avengers 5,” it’s likely that the storylines from “Thunderbolts” will significantly influence the film.
Chris Evans
Prior to Marvel unveiling their five-hour lineup for the upcoming “Doomsday” project, it was previously reported by The Wrap that Chris Evans might make an unexpected comeback in the fifth installment of the “Avengers” series. In 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Evans first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers, a cornerstone character from the franchise’s extended history.
In the initial three “Captain America” films and the first four installments of the Avengers ensemble, Evans portrayed Steve Rogers until his last appearance as Captain America in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. He is set to reprise his role in the MCU for a 13th time in the upcoming film “Doomsday,” having also made a Multiversal return as Johnny Storm in “Deadpool & Wolverine.
Unlike the other characters listed before, Evans’ role in “Doomsday” is not easily defined due to his past association with Marvel, which allows him to perform various functions.
After reviving the role of the Human Torch in “Deadpool & Wolverine“, fans are eagerly anticipating his comeback, this time as a fresh take on Johnny Storm Character, possibly joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Fantastic Four.
According to an inside tip from Jeff Sneider, there’s a suggestion that Chris Evans might be portraying the time-traveling Steve Rogers version of the Nomad character in the upcoming film. Some fans are eagerly anticipating a more brooding performance from Evans, as this movie could provide him with the opportunity to bring to life the HYDRA variant of Captain America as depicted in recent comic books.
As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but speculate about my potential part in “Avengers 5.” With so many intriguing possibilities on the table, it’s bound to spark lively discussions among fellow enthusiasts.
Hayley Atwell
In the initial phase, Hayley Atwell’s character Margaret “Peggy” Carter stood beside Evans. It was reported by Deadline that she will reprise her role in Avengers: Doomsday. Peggy first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Captain America: The First Avenger, where she collaborated with the U.S. Army and an early iteration of SHIELD, participating in World War II battles.
Hayley Atwell has taken on various iterations of Peggy in nine prior Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. These include her self-titled series, “Agent Carter,” as well as several episodes of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” More recently, she portrayed a live-action version of the previously animated Captain Carter, which was featured in last year’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
For her 10th MCU appearance in Doomsday, Atwell’s specific character has not been confirmed.
In this scenario, she might take on different interpretations of Peggy, either one equipped with superpowers or not. If she lacks superpowers, she could serve as a crucial tactical fighter operating covertly or using firearms. On the other hand, her Captain Carter Variant would undoubtedly join forces with other Avengers in their powered-up suits.
After Marvel officially announces her role, fans might gain a clearer picture about how she’ll fit into this already impressive ensemble.
Robert Downey Jr.
When the title for “Avengers 5” officially included “Doomsday”, it was revealed that Marvel Studios’ Doctor Doom would be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who is widely recognized as the most prominent star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception with the first film, “Iron Man” released in 2008.
Following the portrayal of Tony Stark’s backstory, Downey appeared in three “Iron Man” films, four “Avengers” installments, and three other MCU productions. His upcoming role in “Doomsday” marks not just his comeback to the MCU after a seven-year gap but also his 11th overall appearance, as he confronts one of the most famous Marvel villains.
At present, details about Doom’s narrative are under wraps, with speculation that he might not feature in 2025’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Nevertheless, given his strong ties to that squad, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial Phase 6 film could pave the way for his debut.
Regardless of the circumstance, Downey’s portrayal of Doom is anticipated to pose the gravest danger the Avengers have ever encountered. This menacing villain is poised to transcend the boundaries of multiple universes, potentially endangering all existence with annihilation. As filming for “Doomsday” is underway, fans are on tenterhooks, eagerly waiting for updates about how Downey’s Doom will indelibly alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which Other Phase 1 Characters Could Join Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast?
During Phase 1, the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” has already showcased a good representation of its characters. However, there are several other stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s early days who could potentially make appearances as well. Among these standouts who haven’t yet been confirmed for roles are Scarlett Johansson (as Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (as Hulk), and Jeremy Renner (as Hawkeye).
Although Natasha Romanoff, portrayed by Johansson, appears less probable given her death in “Avengers: Endgame”, there’s a possibility that a variant of her character might be part of her original team again. The likelihood increases with rumors about Chris Evans’s return to the series.
It’s more likely that we’ll see Chris Evans (Renner) and Mark Ruffalo (Ruffalo) return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given their last live-action appearances were in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Their dedication to the MCU remains unwavering, with Ruffalo himself expressing excitement for “Doomsday’s” sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, following its announcement during his promotional activities for “She-Hulk”.
Characters like War Machine (portrayed by Don Cheadle) and Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson), who first appeared in the initial two
In the recent series Secret Invasion, Cheadle made his last appearance. After featuring in the final three Avengers movies, spectators would find it surprising if he didn’t show up in Doomsday. Regarding Jackson, given that he has starred in 15 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions to date, there is a strong belief among fans that he will reappear in some form for Avengers 5.
As filming continues for “Doomsday,” it’s likely that Marvel may reveal additional cast members, given upcoming events such as San Diego Comic-Con approaching. With five Phases of both heroes and villains already established, plus over a decade worth of legacy films, there are still many more characters to be added to the roster.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
