Odyssey Jones inserted into a big spot with The New Day

As a long-time WWE enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless wrestling careers, I must admit that the recent addition of Odyssey Jones to The New Day’s storyline piqued my interest. With his impressive size and Big E’s endorsement, there’s no doubt that Jones possesses a captivating persona.

Concerns arose among fans when it was announced that The New Day would go up against AOP on WWE Raw’s August 5 episode, as there were strong indications that the long-standing trio might break up after a decade. However, an unexpected twist unfolded as Odyssey Jones intervened to rescue Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, who were being assaulted by The Final Testament. This new character adds an intriguing twist to what was already shaping up to be a captivating storyline.

At 6 feet 5 inches tall and tipping the scales at 405 pounds, Jones possesses the imposing stature needed to go toe-to-toe with opponents from The Final Testament. His entrance into WWE NXT garnered widespread attention, and he advanced significantly in the Breakout Tournament before being bested by Carmelo Hayes in the finals. Unfortunately, Jones’ career took a turn after a knee injury halted his progress, preventing him from gaining momentum in subsequent matches.

2023 saw an unexpected selection of Jones into the WWE Raw roster during the annual draft, but his absence from TV screens persisted throughout. A full year later, he was once again drafted by Raw, sparking humor among fans who speculated that this would become an annual tradition for him without ever wrestling a televised match.

Sure, Jones was a big surprise in this angle, but he’s a perplexing addition to it as well. According to Cagematch, he’s had a total of 70 matches in his career. That includes nine in 2024. His last match on television was against Dijak on the April 4 episode of WWE NXT. To potentially insert him into a faction like The New Day and in an angle that has so many eyes on it is perplexing. Jones is a big personality, but he’s very green in a spot like this. He came with some big praise from Big E after the segment.

Transformed: “Wow, I was absolutely incredible out there tonight! Seems like I’ve won over a lot of new fans with my skills in Odyssey – feels great to be shining so bright!” (First person perspective as the “big man” or player)

Fans were certainly intrigued and an angle that most weren’t looking forward to suddenly has momentum going forward. Here’s to hoping that Odyssey Jones lives up to this big moment.
