Odessa Young and Joe Cole lead Nordic horror film The Damned

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless virtual worlds, I must say that the trailer for “The Damned” has successfully transported me to a chilling, 19th-century Icelandic landscape. The stark beauty of the setting and the haunting atmosphere evoke memories of my survival adventures in games like “The Long Dark” or “Subnautica”.

Here’s the new take on the text: The official trailer for the spine-tingling thriller, The Damned, has been unveiled by Vertical. In this 19th-century story, Odessa Young, known for her role in Manodrome, and Joe Cole, famed from Peaky Blinders, take the lead.

In the frosty heart of a land that echoes Iceland’s grandeur, living in a secluded fishing outpost amidst the relentless winter’s bite is already a grueling challenge. But when a vessel meets its doom off our shores, it leaves us, Eve (Young), and our community grappling with a life-altering question: Do we extend a hand to the shipwrecked crew or turn our backs on them?

In this unforgiving wilderness, reminiscent of the Westfjords in the late 1800s, resources are scarce, and sharing them might mean my downfall. Yet, I must weigh the risks, for my choices will have consequences. The trailer hints at a community haunted by chilling visions, born from the burdens of their past misdeeds.

The movie titled “The Damned” is directed by Thordur Palsson, who previously worked on “The Valhalla Murders“. It is set to hit select theaters starting January 3, 2025. The script for this chilling tale has been penned by Jamie Hannigan, with ideas drawn from Palsson himself. Upon viewing the trailer, it appears to be a Nordic horror that would delight fans of “The Terror” and Robert Eggers’ “The Witch“.

Palsson, a native Icelander, drew inspiration for his novel “The Damned” from the local folklore he was exposed to in his childhood. He frequently heard tales of demons and malevolent entities from his relatives.

The production team went to great lengths to authentically portray a challenging scenario such as this one, as indicated by the behind-the-scenes notes. During rehearsals that lasted a week in Reykjavik, the cast built strong relationships with each other to convincingly depict the tight-knit community seen on screen. Director Palsson was particularly keen on delving into the disputes that arise in situations like this, given the diverse beliefs within the community. Some characters are quite close-minded, while others exhibit fear of the supernatural.

Actress Francis Magee explains that Skuli possesses a non-religious and practical nature, while Helga holds firm to her Pagan convictions regarding the supernatural or spiritual realm. Skuli, on the other hand, dismisses any notion of anything beyond the natural world, focusing instead on self-preservation.

In addition to Young and Cole, the cast of The Damned includes Siobhan Finneran, Rory McCann, Turlough Convery, Lewis Gribben, Francis Magee, Mícheál Óg Lane, Andrean Sigurgeirsson, Guillermo Uria, and Arnar Máni Iansson Gray.

The Damned begins playing in theaters on January 3.
