Oded Fehr points out a key similarity between Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Discovery. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is currently available on Paramount+ and has a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, shares a core element with the newer series.
Oded Fehr returns as Admiral Charles Vance, the head of Starfleet, a role he first played in Star Trek: Discovery. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Vance is central to the United Federation of Planets’ efforts to recover after The Burn, overseeing the reopening of Starfleet Academy and the appointment of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) as the new Chancellor.
ScreenRant spoke with Oded Fehr about his return as Admiral Vance in the upcoming series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Fehr believes the core of both Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Discovery is the Star Trek universe itself, but he particularly appreciates the more upbeat and positive tone of the new series, which focuses on the experiences of students at Starfleet Academy. Here’s what he had to say:
ScreenRant asked about my experience with two Star Trek series, wanting to know how they differ. They were particularly curious about the atmosphere on the set of Starfleet Academy versus that of Discovery.
Working on this new Star Trek series feels familiar in many ways, because at its heart, it is Star Trek. The production really emphasizes the legacy of the show, and we all feel a lot of respect for what came before, which is great. It’s a really positive and welcoming environment to be a part of.
What sets this show apart is its feeling of possibility, like being back in college. When you visit a college campus, you sense a lightness, optimism, and a joy for learning and new experiences. It’s a break from the everyday grind and all our worries. It feels like anything could happen, and you could actually make a difference. That hopeful energy is really what comes through in the show.
Even with Admiral Vance, despite his generally serious demeanor, he showed a bit more playfulness on the show – a willingness to smile, joke around, and be less formal.
The tone of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is noticeably different from Star Trek: Discovery. Starfleet Academy focuses on the hopeful spirit of young cadets eager to improve the world they’ve been given. As head of the Academy, Captain Ake prioritizes fostering her students’ idealism and getting them ready for the difficulties they’ll face as future Starfleet officers.
Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the starship USS Discovery were at the heart of Star Trek: Discovery, constantly dealing with major threats to the Federation. Though the crew represented the best of 23rd-century Starfleet, the show was ultimately about finding hope even in the darkest of times.
As Oded Fehr has observed, Admiral Vance seems happier and more hopeful than when we first met him in Star Trek: Discovery. Successfully working alongside Captain Burnham to rebuild the Federation has given him the confidence to trust the future to Captain Ake and the next generation at Starfleet Academy.
The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, continues the hopeful and forward-thinking vision of Star Trek that Gene Roddenberry originally created, just like Star Trek: Discovery did. Admiral Vance is in charge of Captain Ake, and familiar faces from Star Trek: Discovery – Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) and Lieutenant Silvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) – are also present as instructors at Starfleet Academy.
