Oddity ending explained: Who really killed Dani and why?
As a seasoned horror aficionado who’s seen more than my fair share of spine-tingling tales, I must say that “Oddity” has left me truly spellbound. It’s not often that a film manages to weave together such an intricate plot with a dash of the supernatural and a pinch of psychological suspense, all while keeping me on the edge of my seat.
2024’s horror film “Oddity” is being widely praised for its chilling content, as indicated by a remarkable 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
The movie you’re referring to, distributed by IFC Films/Shudder, is a production of director Damian Mc Carthy, who also helmed the film “Caveat”. Similar to his previous work, Mc Carthy penned and directed “Oddity”, a story about a blind psychic on a quest to uncover the truth behind her sister’s murder. Suspecting that the apparent killer may not be the real culprit, she delves deeper into the case. [Spoilers ahead for the movie “Oddity”]
Who killed Dani?
As a devoted viewer, I initially believed that the notorious former psychiatric inmate, Olin Boole, was responsible for my beloved character Dani’s tragic loss. However, the gripping third act of this thriller unveiled an unsettling twist: it was none other than Dani’s own husband, Dr. Ted Timmis, who had been hiding the truth all along. With his accomplice, the despicable hospital orderly Ivan, they orchestrated the heinous crime.
It appears that Ted had been unfaithful to Dani for quite some time, involving himself with Yana. This might be the reason behind his swift departure. Tim was considering ending things with Dani but feared she would fight for the house during their divorce, making it complicated. Instead of handling this maturely, he asked Ivan to break into the house when Dani was alone and harm her. Coincidentally, Olin was listening in from his cell through a vent, which is why he attempted to alert Dani ahead of time.
At first, thinking Olin was indeed responsible for her sister’s death, Darcy sought revenge against him by cruelly taking his life. Using her psychometric abilities and Olin’s glass eye as a conduit, she delved into his memories, uncovering the conversation he had eavesdropped on. Through this, Darcy discovered the dark truth about her brother-in-law and his treachery.
What happens in the very end?
When Darcy clashes with Ted, he devises a fresh strategy to eliminate her as well. Since Darcy is visually impaired and unaware of the house layout, Ted conceals a hidden trap door in the floor, causing Darcy to tumble into it, falling toward what appears to be her demise. Later on, Ted instructs Ivan to visit the house to complete Darcy’s elimination.
In her final moments, she employs her link with the lifeless mannequin to animate it and eliminate Ivan. Tragically, she succumbs before the mannequin completes its task. However, this eerie incident leaves Ivan distraught, and he babbles about the mannequin becoming animated to a nurse. Tim can’t allow Ivan to disclose such information, so he releases one of his vicious cellmates to mercilessly slay Ivan while he’s restrained.
After coming home, Ted finds himself in the clear, free from any legal repercussions. Unfortunately, both Darcy and Dani are no longer alive, but Yana chooses to end their relationship after everything that has happened. Despite this, Ted maintains his good standing and continues to own the house. However, it seems that Tim may skate by without facing any consequences until a package arrives from Darcy’s strange antique shop. Inside the box is an ominous call bell, which Darcy had warned Ted was cursed – anyone who pressed it met their untimely demise. Despite this warning, Ted bravely presses the button, igniting a chain of mysterious events.
It’s clear Ted won’t listen to that warning due to his arrogance. He can’t resist taking action, so when he rings the bell and nothing happens, he feels justified in not being concerned. However, it isn’t until the last scene that we see the vengeful ghost of the former bellhop standing behind him, ready to strike – indicating Ted may have underestimated the danger.
What’s the deal with the wooden mannequin?
The wooden dummy, or the “Wooden Man” as he’s also referred to as, comes from the folklore surrounding golems. Director/writer Damian Mc Carthy chatted with Mashable about his inspiration for the entity.
Absolutely! The mannequin shares similarities with horror stereotypes concerning animate dolls, while the golem, a character from Jewish mythology, is a figure made of clay that can be brought to life by a creator, performing tasks as instructed.
There’s stuff in there that’s never really explained. Like, what are these rituals? Or how does this work? It’s a little bit like with the holes in the back of [The Wooden Man’s] head.
The story Oddity doesn’t fully explain the nature or the connection between the Wooden Man and Darcy, but it shows a scene where Yana extracts objects from the wooden man’s skull, suggesting that Darcy may perform some sort of ritual to control him. This is reinforced in the finale when Darcy appears to use her own blood to manipulate the mannequin as it dies, hinting at her control over it.
Oddity is now available to rent or buy on demand, but it will begin streaming on Shudder on Friday, September 27.
