Fans of Karen Pirie might want to stay tuned for an upcoming BBC psychological thriller, which promises to be intensely engaging.

In “The Ridge,” actress Lauren Lyle from ITV dramas takes on the character of Mia. This woman travels to New Zealand for her sister’s wedding but instead finds her sister deceased. As a result, Mia uncovers secrets within the local community and experiences growing tensions.

Additionally featuring Jay Ryan from “Top of the Lake,” this series hails from Nora Chassler, an author known for books like “Madame Bildungsroman’s Optimistic Worldview” and “Miss Thing.” It is also developed by David Murdoch, who won a BAFTA Scotland award for his work on “Spare Parts.

The filming for the project kicked off earlier this year, as BBC Scotland commissioning editor Gavin Smith expressed his pleasure stating: “We’re thrilled that The Ridge has commenced shooting.

This project is a tremendous opportunity for BBC Scotland, showcasing our desire to transcend boundaries and deliver top-tier drama not only to Scottish viewers but also to global audiences. ‘The Ridge’ boasts an elite international crew that we are honored to collaborate with.

This show is jointly produced by BBC Scotland and Sky New Zealand Originals, with Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Jon Rutherford, and Erik Pack serving as the executive producers.

New Zealand’s Great Southern Studios, known for producing shows like “One Lane Bridge”, and Scotland’s Sinner Films, famous for creating series such as “Untamed” and “The Most Assassinated Woman in the World”, have also been involved in film production.

What is The Ridge about?

The storyline of “The Ridge” revolves around Mia, a woman who is escaping the grip of addiction and abandoning a once thriving career that has fallen apart in Scotland.

She receives a wedding invitation from her long-lost sister living in New Zealand, but upon her arrival, she discovers the bride-to-be has tragically passed away.

Mia, mourning her sister and drawn mysteriously to her sister’s former fiancé, portrayed by the renowned New Zealand actor Jay Ryan, uncovers that intimacy within a tight-knit community often conceals hidden truths and stresses, potentially threatening the fragile peace of the town itself.

When will The Ridge air?

Although the precise air date isn’t disclosed just yet, it has been verified by the BBC that “The Ridge” will be broadcasted towards the end of 2025. Therefore, you can anticipate its arrival no later than the holiday season.

The Ridge will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC Scotland.
