Obsessed with Dept. Q on Netflix? Here’s how you can watch the original Nordic noir movies right now
The Department Q series has swiftly gained popularity on Netflix, with its Scottish thriller moving up the streaming service’s rankings.
Last week saw the debut of a new series centered around DCI Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode. After a harrowing event, he’s back at work and now responsible for establishing a team dedicated to solving cold cases.
The program is inspired by the Department Q novel series penned by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, with these books subsequently transformed into a collection of Danish films.

Fortunately, for those captivated by the latest Netflix adaptation, enthusiasts have the opportunity to explore the original movie series, which can be streamed on channel Viaplay.
You can include the Swedish service as an option within Prime Video, and it will cost you £4.99 each month following a seven-day free trial.

For those who aren’t currently subscribed to Prime Video, you can enjoy movies entirely free for a 30-day trial. But remember, if you choose to continue, you’ll need to cancel the subscription before the trial ends, as Prime Video will then charge £8.99 per month (equivalent to £95 annually).
The Department Q series consists of four films: “The Keeper of Lost Causes” (adapted from the book “Mercy”), released in 2013; “The Absent One,” which was based on “Disgrace,” came out in 2014; “A Conspiracy of Faith,” an adaptation of “Redemption,” hit screens in 2016; and lastly, “Journal 64” or “The Purity of Vengeance,” derived from “Guilty,” was released in 2018.
2021’s “The Marco Effect” (a spin-off of “Buried”), which brought a fresh perspective to the series with new actors – Ulrich Thomsen stepping into the role of Carl Mørck from Nikolaj Lie Kaas, and Zaki Youssef replacing Fares Fares as Assad.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation for the upcoming 2024 flick, “Boundless,” which is derived from “The Hanging Girl.” Sadly, it seems that us folks across the pond in the UK won’t be able to stream it just yet.
The movies have garnered favorable critiques; the initial one boasts a 71% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas its sequel showcases a remarkable 92% fresh score. However, A Conspiracy of Faith surpassed these numbers, earning an exceptional perfect score.
According to Digital Spy’s review of the Dept. Q Netflix series, it was nearly a five-star must-watch.
Ultimately, what remains is an exceptional ensemble who have transformed a narrative brimming with promise into a captivating reality, elevating the series to its current status as an engaging viewing experience.
In addition to Goode, the series boasts a stellar cast that includes Kelly Macdonald from Line of Duty, Mark Bonnar, known for Game of Thrones, Kate Dickie from The Queen’s Gambit, Chloe Pirrie who was in Guilt and Jack Ryan, as well as Alexej Manvelov from Call the Midwife and Shirley Henderson, famed for Happy Valley.
Dept. Q is streaming now on Netflix.
