Objection! Kathy Bates won't retire after 'Matlock' reboot, she says

As a movie enthusiast with a deep affection for the silver screen and its timeless stars, I must express my sheer delight at the news that Kathy Bates isn’t retiring anytime soon! With a career spanning over five decades, it seems this extraordinary actress has only just begun to dance.

Stop the presses — Kathy Bates isn’t ready to retire after “Matlock” like we thought.

She was almost done with her acting career when she came across showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman’s script for the Andy Griffith drama revival. Bates mentioned this to ABC’s George Pennacchio during a conversation on the red carpet at the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday.

In a recent chat with the New York Times, I may have led some viewers astray by hinting at the end of my acting career. However, let me clarify that it was more of a figure of speech when I mentioned “Matlock” as my final curtain call. It appears the retirement buzz might have been a bit of an overreaction.

“I was very flattered that everybody was upset,” the “Misery” star told “ET” at the Emmys.

In the upcoming reboot, Bates is set to play the role of Madeline Matlock, a lawyer who shifts genders. The plot revolves around her character’s return to work at a law firm, where she employs her understated manner and clever strategies to secure victories and uncover corruption from within the system.

In the same “ET” interview, co-star Skye P. Marshall expressed that if she believes America, or even the world, would not allow Bates to retire after ‘Matlock‘, she would forcibly remove him from his house, causing a commotion.

76-year-old Bates made her acting debut in 1970 and has since been recognized with a Tony nomination, four Oscar nominations, and an impressive 14 Emmy Award nominations. She clinched an Academy Award for Best Lead Actress in the 1990 thriller “Misery” for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes. Her other performances have garnered her two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

“Matlock” premieres Sept. 22 on CBS.
