NYX will be Marvel’s best and, unfortunately, most hated comic book

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the medium over the decades, I must say that the latest X-Men saga, From the Ashes, has truly captured my heart with its diverse and captivating storylines. Among the three initial releases, NYX by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing stands out as the best comic book of the week, and quite possibly, of 2024.

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the X-Men universe, I’ve been thrilled to delve into their latest saga titled “From the Ashes”. So far, it has given birth to three captivating comic books. The first one, “X-Men”, penned by Jed MacKay, hooked me right from the start. Following that, I found myself captivated by “Phoenix”, written by Stephanie Phillips. And just recently, I’ve dived into “NYX”, a riveting tale crafted by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. Each one has added a unique layer to this exhilarating journey within the X-Men world.

I observed that NYX stands out as the top comic book pick for the week, featuring characters like Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Wolverine (Laura Kinney), and lesser-known mutants who deserve more attention. The debut issue surpassed expectations and hints at this becoming the best comic book of 2024. However, it’s also likely to draw criticism as well.

In this series, NYX No. 1 effectively introduces all the previous Krakoans who now play prominent roles, detailing their post-Krakoa lives. Despite the hardships they’ve faced, Kamala and Laura continue their heroic endeavors. Anole has taken up work as a bartender, Prodigy is now a college professor, while Sophie Cukoo enjoys her student life to the fullest.

In the progression of the series, we encounter the initial major antagonists. A shrouded figure known as The Krakoan emerges, unveiling himself as the culprit behind the destruction of New York, acting under the banner of the deceased Krakoa. The concluding scene hints at Julian Keller’s transformation into The Kra, alongside Empath (who is particularly malevolent) and three of the Stepford Cuckoos, constructing their own version of a governing body similar to the Quiet Council.

So far, everything seems promising. However, there might be an obstacle you’re considering. Regrettably, some readers may find it difficult to look beyond the well-crafted characters created by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing in NYX. Characters like Anole and David who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, a Muslim woman named Kamala, Laura as Wolverine, and one of the Steford Cukoos might deter certain readers from appreciating the greatness of this series.

One of the many wonders globally, New York City stands out as incredibly multicultural. Just like any other place, it faces challenges such as discrimination based on race, fear of strangers (xenophobia), and prejudice towards LGBTQ+ individuals. It’s important to note that New York is not immune to these issues. By tackling hate and fear head-on in our series, we can make it even more compelling and reflective of the world we live in.

As a gamer, I’m not just talking about the New Quiet Council. There’s a radical faction known as the Truthseekers, bent on damaging the already fragile reputation of mutants. Just like some viewers disliked season 4 of The Boys, there will be readers who find too much familiarity in the Truthseekers characters, who go to great lengths to smear innocent mutants (sometimes the truth can sting).

To conclude, the motivation behind the conflicts among the mutants in NYX stems from real-life issues. Laura has experienced homelessness in New York and recognizes the threats that exist. Similarly, Kamala is a proud Muslim woman who faces misunderstanding and intolerance in society, often leading to fear and occasional violence. Anole is a gay mutant with a lizard-like appearance, while David is a Black bisexual man. Unfortunately, their unique physical characteristics sometimes provoke hostility from others. The combination of their sexual orientations (LGBTQ+) only intensifies the hatred they encounter. Sophie, being an outspoken woman, faces backlash from self-proclaimed “alpha males” for expressing her opinions.

I’m eagerly anticipating that everyone adores NYX, as it boasts not only a stellar writing team but also features the artistry of Francesco Mortarino. The debut issue even suggests it could be the standout comic book of the year. However, the depiction of this comic is significant to its brilliance; the more diversity it showcases, the more inclusive and relatable it becomes for readers. I hope that people will delve into this series to grasp why it’s special.
