NXT or Main Roster: Motor City Machine Guns seemingly headed to WWE

As a seasoned wrestling fan with decades of watching ringside action under my belt, I must say that the news about Motor City Machine Guns (MCMG) joining WWE is music to my ears. However, the question of where they should debut stirs a bit of debate within me.

On September 12th, discussions centered around the Motor City Machine Guns, following the announcement that Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin had joined WWE and were set to debut in NXT’s premiere on CW. However, there was a significant debate about whether NXT was the ideal platform for them at this stage of their careers. The answer could lean either way, with both arguments carrying weight.

NXT has subtly emerged as one of WWE’s top weekly productions, offering an array of engaging content. It consistently delivers high-quality professional wrestling, intriguing characters that keep viewers hooked, and showcases diverse talent, including women and people of color every week. The program has significantly improved since the transition to NXT 2.0, which initially caused some damage to its reputation.

Yet, NXT is still considered developmental. It’s where names like Trick Williams, JeVon Evans, and Charlie Dempsey cut their teeth before being whisked away to the main roster, if that even happens. While some main roster stars may drop in from time to time, SmackDown and Monday Night Raw are their true homes as the flagship shows.

NXT may be shifting over to CW and will potentially be treated as a bigger deal, but it is still the third brand on the hierarchy scale. That is an issue with MCMG fans who are thinking about seeing these two performers in “developmental.” While there’s an opportunity for some great matches, Sabin and Shelley are 42 and 41 years of age, respectively. They are almost twice as old as several of the top names in NXT today. While those individuals stand to learn a lot from MCMG, the question is how much longer will they be able to perform at their current level? The clock is running, and to some viewers, sending Sabin and Shelley to NXT may be seen as wasting what precious time they have in the ring.

Consider potential bouts for MCMG if they were immediately elevated to the main roster. They could square off against teams such as DIY, Pretty Deadly, GOD, Street Profits, Finn Balor and JD McDonagh, along with others. Many talented wrestlers are poised to challenge them and put on a main event-worthy spectacle. The Lucha Bros, rumored to be joining WWE soon, promise another thrilling match in the near future that could outshine all others.

The one match that many are looking forward to is Sabin and Shelley versus Axiom and Nathan Frazer. While that match would be exceptional, there’s no reason for the multi-time champions to have to go to NXT for that to happen. WWE could simply move Axiom and Frazer to either brand, further boosting a tag team division that needs it.

If it’s true that Sabin and Shelley are joining WWE, the promotion stands to gain not just one of the world’s finest teams, but also two exceptional singles performers at the top of their game. There might be varying opinions about where they should be placed on the roster, but everyone is hoping they will be utilized effectively when the time comes.
