NSYNC alum Lance Bass gets candid about career fallout after coming out in 2006

As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Lance Bass‘s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of staying true to oneself. His candid revelation about losing major projects due to his sexuality is disheartening, yet it underscores the unfortunate reality many in the LGBTQ+ community face.

Lance Bass openly discussed how he lost significant opportunities earlier due to being perceived as too well-known for being openly gay.

In 2006, four years following the breakup of NSYNC, the band member who is now 45 years old admitted that he felt like he’d lost everything when he publicly declared his identity as a gay man in an interview with People Magazine.

On Thursday, I found myself sharing some insights on the Politickin’ podcast alongside Gov. Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Hendrickson. During our conversation, I confessed a past experience that I hold close to my heart – back then, I had landed a role in a CW sitcom. However, before I could bring this project to life for everyone to enjoy, it unfortunately fell through when I decided to be open about my sexuality.

The vocalist reminisced about an occasion when we were preparing to film the pilot episode. Suddenly, something unexpected occurred, and they responded, “We can no longer produce the series.” They felt it was inappropriate for me to portray a heterosexual character because I’m straight myself.

From 1995 up until its disbandment in 2002, Bass was a part of the well-known group that is best known for. This split occurred due to Justin Timberlake’s desire to embark on a solo venture. The band, NSYNC, became popular largely because of their predominantly female fan base. Apart from Bass and Timberlake, its members also included Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone.

Upon stepping forward as the Mississippian, I was met with the response from the executives: “I’m unsure of how to proceed with your situation.

In the podcast, he shared this insight: ‘All casting directors I have encountered tell me, “Lance, we can’t choose you for roles because your fame due to being openly gay makes it difficult for them to see you as anything else but a gay character now.”‘

‘I had to completely just restart and rebrand at that moment,’ Bass added.

Despite the nightmare news, the Bye Bye Bye singer went on to launch a successful acting career and continued to make music after NSYNC’s demise.

He has starred in various films and TV shows including I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Handy Manny, Gravity Falls, On The Line and Finding Prince Charming among others.

Currently, Bass acknowledges that there are no lingering grudges against the executives and agents who once ignored him. Remarkably, some of them have since changed their positions.

He said, ‘Lot of the casting directors for sure, they’re all kinda like, “Yeah, that was really dumb.” They’ve actually cast me a lot of things since, which is really funny and ironic. But I never hold grudges at all. I get it.’

Since 2014, the versatile individual has been wedded to the actor Michael Turchin. This coming Friday, December 20th, they will be celebrating ten years of matrimony.

The first same-sex wedding broadcast on national television was the one that took place in Los Angeles, making history for their nuptials.

Back in 2021, the love birds welcomed twins Violet and Alexander via surrogate.

On their individual social media platforms, both Bass and Turchin, aged 37, often exhibit and highlight the delightful glimpses of their family life, which consists of four members, as well as the heartwarming instances they cherish together.

This year, the artist behind “Walking on Air” disclosed the key to their enduring, happy marriage – a secret they’ve kept all this time.

In April, he shared that authenticity with each other forms the foundation for a loving connection among people.

Bass emphasized the importance of empathy, allowing others to be themselves without attempting to alter their nature.

‘I think you are who you are and you just gotta accept them the way they are.’

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but echo his words: ‘There’s an allure in the disparities between us, and oh, there are plenty of those! It’s these differences that have always piqued my curiosity… And I believe it was precisely this – our contrasting lives and unique talents – that initially drew me to [Turchin].’
