Now You See Me 3 Must Perform The One Trick The Other 2 Movies Avoided

The third installment in the Now You See Me series, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is almost here! While I’m excited about it, I’m also a bit worried. The previous film, Now You See Me 2, had an ending that revealed a larger issue with the franchise, and I fear this new movie will follow the same pattern.

With almost ten years since the last film, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t suggests a welcome shift in how the series tells its stories. The filmmakers clearly invested time in the plot and seem confident in it, so I’m hoping it will pleasantly surprise me and prove my initial doubts wrong.

Jesse Eisenberg hinted at a surprising plot twist and some familiar faces appearing in the upcoming Now You See Me movie. This makes me question whether the film will focus more on looking good than having a meaningful story, which has been a pattern with the series. While it’s likely to be visually impressive, I’m hoping the movie gives enough attention to all its characters, especially since half of them are new to this third installment.

The Now You See Me Franchise’s Magic Setpieces Go Overboard

Lionsgate Films

Movies create believable worlds where extraordinary things happen, but they still follow the rules of reality. Magic, however, relies on the audience willingly not believing what they see – the fun of a magic trick comes from being surprised. Because of this, complex magic often doesn’t translate well to film; the mystery is lost when everything is revealed.

Beyond a handful of impressive close-up magic moments, the Now You See Me films don’t really feel magical. Even the amazing card-throwing scene in Now You See Me 2, despite being exciting, doesn’t come across as real magic because it relies on physics-defying stunts. It feels more like a special effect than a trick.

The card trick on the plane in Now You See Me, later revealed to be performed by Mark Ruffalo’s character, is quite impressive, even though most of it happens out of view. Magic tricks relying on misdirection work best in film when scenes aren’t filled with fast editing and quick cuts.

The Now You See Me movies often fail to keep audiences engaged during their magic scenes. While the tricks themselves are visually impressive and grand in scale, they’re so complex that they require lengthy explanations to make sense. Unfortunately, these explanations reveal details viewers couldn’t have possibly noticed, which destroys the illusion of magic.

A truly skilled magician makes you feel like you could figure out their tricks if you just watched closely, even though it’s all about illusion. But the elaborate set pieces in Now You See Me are so complex that they feel unfair – you’d never realistically guess the solution, and it would have been more satisfying to just watch the explanation.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t Has To Be More Character-Driven

The Now You See Me films are meant to highlight impressive illusions. So, how do you film magic tricks when the process of filmmaking actually goes against how magic works? The solution is to focus the artistry on everything around the trick, distracting the audience from the fact that the illusion itself isn’t realistically happening.

If the third movie spends more time developing the characters and what drives them, you might become invested enough to overlook the difficulty of recreating the original’s magic on film. The big reveal at the end, which explains all the elaborate scenes, needs to be more emotionally resonant and clearly connected to the characters’ decisions.

The trailer for Now You See Me 3 shows that the movie will focus on tension between the original Four Horsemen and some new characters. While the action sequences look impressive, the film would be even better if it explores the conflicts and relationships between these characters.

While it’s clear the seven magicians will team up to defeat the wealthy villain and dismantle her unfair empire, there’s still room for a compelling, character-focused story. For example, Dylan Shrike’s quest to avenge his father is the first time I’ve truly felt invested in one of the characters.

The Threequel’s Stellar Cast Supports This Change

The Now You See Me films are known for their talented casts, and the next installment will be no different. Familiar faces like Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman are back. Isla Fisher, who wasn’t in the second movie, is also returning. Joining them are new magicians played by Ariana Greenblatt, Dominic Sessa, and Justice Smith, while Rosamund Pike will play the villain.

With planned appearances from familiar faces in Now You See Me 3, the movie boasts a strong cast capable of delivering a story focused on character development. Each actor has a track record of handling complex and emotionally resonant roles, making them well-suited for this kind of narrative approach.
