He posted a news article about the film and expressed his disappointment that it doesn’t appear any Egyptian creatives are involved in its production. The easiest way to revive this tired franchise, and continue relying on outdated Egyptian stereotypes? Simple: don’t include any actual Egyptians in the creative process, just like before.
The Mummy movies have always featured a lot of imagery from ancient Egypt, especially the first two films. Those movies were created by Stephen Sommers, a North American writer and director. Recent reports suggest that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known together as Radio Silence, are directing the fourth film. However, as of now, neither the studio, Universal, nor the filmmakers have officially confirmed the project or its development.
Director Mohamed Diab’s views align with a growing conversation about diversity in entertainment. Increasingly, audiences and creators are requesting more genuine and culturally specific stories. A key part of this is ensuring that people from those cultures are involved in creating those stories. After The Mummy Reboot Was Announced, It Seems Like Every Fan Is Asking For The Exact Same Thing
When Moon Knight premiered in 2022, it quickly gained a positive response from fans who enjoyed its action-packed take on the comic book story and its portrayal of the main character. Many also praised the show for its respectful and nuanced depiction of Egypt and its culture, avoiding common stereotypes. Notably, Moon Knight introduced Scarlet Scarab, the first Egyptian superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Mohamed Diab went beyond simply using Egyptian locations as scenery, instead showcasing the diverse sides and complexities of Egypt itself.
What Radio Silence has planned for the next Mummy movie is still a mystery, as they’re keeping details secret. It’s important to note that this isn’t the Mummy reboot directed by Lee Cronin, which is currently scheduled for release in 2026. Information about that film is limited too, although we do know actors like May Calamawy and May Elghety are involved.
We’ll have to wait and see what Universal decides to do with the next Mummy movie. Fans will definitely have opinions about the action and which characters they want to see return. But hopefully, everyone will agree that it’s important for the film to avoid relying on tired, predictable character tropes.
