Nova's Lauren Phillips says she was left 'broken' and considered fleeing the country after rivals Kyle & Jackie O took her Melbourne radio gig in $200million expansion deal

As a dedicated fan of Australian radio, I can’t help but be deeply moved by Lauren Phillips’ heartfelt account of her experience being let go from KIIS FM to make way for Kyle & Jackie O’s expansion into Melbourne. Her raw emotion and resilience in the face of adversity are truly inspiring.

Lauren Phillips has spoken openly about being let go from her position at KIIS FM following Kyle and Jackie O’s successful $200 million deal to expand their broadcasting into Melbourne.

During their show on Nova 100, the hosts, including the one in question and her colleague Jase Hawkins, shared the painful aftermath of a conflict with some radio personalities. She confessed that she felt shattered and even contemplated leaving the country after believing her broadcasting career had come to an end.

‘I was gutted. I thought that was the end of my radio career,’ she told news.com.au.

‘Late last year I was ready to leave the country and move overseas. I was like, “I’m out of here”.’

When Nova asked Phillips if she would join them for a morning radio show, Phillips shared her initial reluctance, expressing concern about being let go once more.

‘I had a pretty bad taste in my mouth and I was scared of that happening again,’ she said.

After Jase and Lauren outperformed Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson in the latest radio ratings in Sydney, they took the lead.

Lauren Phillips and Jason Hawkins achieved a significant success in the FM breakfast radio ratings in Melbourne, moving up as the second most popular show among listeners.

In the most recent poll, their 8.7 percent market share grew to 9.6 percent, surpassing FOX FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick, whose share decreased from 10 percent to 9.5 percent, moving them into third position.

In the radio ratings, The Kyle and Jackie O show ranked sixth, securing a 5.9 percent audience share below smoothfm and Triple M’s Marty Sheargold Show.

Christian O’Connell on Melbourne’s GOLD FM continues to lead morning radio shows with an impressive 10.8 percent audience reach.

Earlier this month, Sandilands broke his silence after his show fell short in the ratings.

The 53-year-old offered his perspective on the outcomes and the development of The Kyle & Jackie O Show, stating that although the results weren’t ideal, the program has been gradually picking up popularity in Melbourne.

‘We gained another 50,000 people, but apparently that wasn’t good enough,’ he said live on air.

He added: ‘It’s a slow burn, you know, not everyone wants to hear about dildos and a**e-licking.’

On April 29, Kyle and Jackie O brought their popular breakfast radio show to Melbourne as part of a massive, multimillion-dollar expansion agreement.

The move triggered the axing of Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins and Lauren Phillips’ breakfast show.

Without showing remorse, Kyle stated that he didn’t care if his rivals were let go because what mattered most was who had the largest audience.

He expressed indifference and shared with news.com.au that they had decided to move on from Jase and Lauren’s radio show on KIIS FM since it hadn’t managed to rank higher than fourth in the ratings.

He mentioned that The Kyle and Jackie O Show was relocated to Melbourne due to a struggling market, and their broadcast could potentially win back listeners.

Instead, Jackie O, Kyle’s co-host, held a contrasting perspective. Though she disliked eliminating contestants, she acknowledged that it was an unavoidable aspect of their line of work.

She expressed that nobody enjoys displacing someone from their position. The thought of it happening to herself was unwelcome as well. It’s a tricky situation indeed, she added.
