Nova’s Jase and Lauren tell their listeners what they really think after their axing from KIIS FM last year: ‘We got shafted!’
As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience in the radio industry, I’ve seen it all – from the highs of ratings victories to the lows of unexpected axings. The story of Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, who were unceremoniously let go by KIIS FM in 2023 only to bounce back with a vengeance on Nova 100, is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of second chances.
In my fervent excitement, let me share a behind-the-scenes peek into the thoughts of Nova 100’s beloved duo, Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, as they bid adieu to their previous roles. With teary gratitude, they expressed their heartfelt thanks to their fans for standing by them through thick and thin.
The radio duo were celebrating one year of Jase and Lauren for breakfast on the Nova network, after being dumped by KIIS FM in 2023.
Lauren expressed her gratitude during the Friday morning broadcast, saying, “We’re simply expressing our thanks to all of you for tuning in to our program. Exactly a year ago today, we were informed that no one was interested in listening to us on the radio.
‘We got shafted a year ago to the day,’ added Jase.
Last year, the hosts of the morning radio show in Melbourne were taken by surprise when their program was canceled to allow Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson to broaden their popular Sydney-based show into Melbourne.
‘We love waking up with you in the mornings,’ Lauren continued.
2021 has been quite the thrilling ride for us, filled with ups and downs. Yet, we’re delighted to be in this journey. It stands as the most rewarding professional chapter of my career so far.
I want to express my gratitude to all of you for following us during this transition. A year ago, if someone had predicted that we’d be where we are today, accomplishing what we’re doing now, our minds would have been blown away. Frankly, we wouldn’t have thought it possible.
As the dreaded “axing season” of November and December approached for radio stations, they were hit with two surprising announcements last week. (Informal: Known as the “axing season”, these months are when radio stations often face tough decisions.)
Without knowing it, popular radio personality Mark ‘MG’ Geyer discovered that his tenure at Triple M was drawing to a close only on Wednesday afternoon, when the shocking news of his dismissal from the Sydney breakfast show came as a surprise.
Simultaneously, KIIS FM host Mitch Churi emotionally shared the news on-air that he had been let go from the network during the same Wednesday broadcast.
During the Pick Up drive time show, shared by Laura Byrne and Brittany Hockley with a fellow host, tears welled up as he disclosed some deeply sad news to his colleagues.
Mitch mentioned that he learned towards the end of last week that his position here won’t be renewed after 2025, according to those in charge.
The Daily Telegraph said that the main person was fired for financial reasons, just like what happened with Lauren and Jase in 2023.)
In April, Kyle and Jackie O moved their morning radio program to Melbourne as part of an expansive agreement worth millions, leading to the termination of Jase and Lauren’s breakfast show on KIIS FM.
At that moment, Kyle expressed no regret, stating that he found himself unaffected by his fellow broadcasters being let go, since the outcome essentially hinged on who managed to garner the largest audience.
He expressed that he doesn’t place much importance on the situation as they made the decision to move to Melbourne because their show with Jase and Lauren on KIIS FM wasn’t doing well in the radio rankings. He explained this to news.com.au.
Nevertheless, Jase and Lauren triumphed when their fresh program on Nova 100 surpassed the audience of The Kyle and Jackie O Show in Melbourne during September.
In the 2024 GFK radio ratings survey, our humorous talk show claimed the prestigious first place position.
In the latest ratings, Jase and Lauren’s highly-acclaimed show increased by 0.3 points, bringing its audience share to 9.9%, solidly outperforming The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
On their debut in Melbourne on April 29th, Kyle and Jackie O’s program had a relatively small audience of 6.1%, making them the city’s fifth-most popular breakfast radio show.
Despite being new to Melbourne, the duo Kyle and Jackie O saw a minor increase in the city’s ratings, climbing from 5.9% to 6.1%.
