Mitch Lewis has been axed after 18 years at Nova’s 106.9 in Brisbane.
Everyone at the station loved the sports presenter, who was also a dad of four. He became popular with viewers thanks to his funny ‘Mitch on the Street’ reports.
He was a familiar face on the station’s breakfast show for many years, most recently hosting The Nick, Luttsy & Susie O’Neill Show.
Management at Nova confirmed Lewis’ surprise redundancy in a statement reported in The Sunday Mail.
I’ve always appreciated Mitch’s work at Nova 106.9, and I was sad to hear he’s moving on. The station put out a statement thanking him for everything he’s done for us listeners, and honestly, it’s well deserved. He really dedicated himself to Nova, and we’ll definitely miss him!
‘We wish Mitch all the very best for the future.’
After 18 wonderful years at Nova, Lewis shared that he’s excited about pursuing new opportunities, telling the publication he cherished his time there.
Ange Anderson, a newsreader for Nova Brisbane, shared a heartfelt message on Radio Today after hearing the upsetting news.
‘Having sat next to Mitch for a decade, you won’t find a more decent and loyal human!’ she said.
‘Enjoy the sleep-ins, mate, they’re bliss.’
Mitch, who is the son of NRL legend Wally Lewis, shares four children with his wife Sarah.
The couple welcomed their youngest, a daughter, Sophie, in June 2021.
Their growing family also includes three boys – James, William and Luke.
Mitch will still be the sideline reporter for the Brisbane Broncos’ NRL games, as usual.
Mitch’s axing comes after a wave of sackings at Nova over the last year.
Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton, who were fired in September, recently spoke publicly after the network previously prevented them from discussing the situation.
The Late Drive pair and co-host Belle Jackson were dropped after their contracts were not renewed.
After the news broke, competing network ARN announced in October that Ben and Liam would be the new hosts of KIIS FM Adelaide’s breakfast show, with Belle serving as the producer. KIIS FM Adelaide was previously known as Mix 102.3.
Originally, their last show was scheduled for December 12th. However, after the news about the ARN show came out, they were taken off the air right away, and their final broadcast on Nova aired on October 24th.
The popular pair recently told News Corp they were shocked to discover their contract with Nova included a clause preventing them from working with other radio stations – essentially keeping them off the air.
Because of the non-compete agreement, Ben and Liam couldn’t work at any other radio station for half a year.
We were surprised when they actually went through with it,” Liam said. “But everything’s okay now, and we’ve moved past it.
‘We’re here now [at KIIS 1023], and we’re ready to give it a red hot crack,’ he said.
