Noted New York menace Spider-Man crashes J.K. Simmons’ night at the Mets game

Look, up in the stands — it’s J.K. Simmons and your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!

J.K. Simmons, the Oscar-winning actor famous for playing J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” movies, ran into his on-screen rival at the New York Mets game on Tuesday.

During the Mets game against the Reds, a clip from “Spider-Man” played on the stadium screen. The camera then showed J. Jonah Jameson in the stands, and behind him, Spider-Man himself was reading a copy of the Daily Bugle.

J.K. Simmons, known for his role in “Whiplash,” playfully acted out a scene with Spider-Man, pretending to be upset and waving his arms. He fully embraced his character, J. Jonah Jameson, and jokingly signaled for Spider-Man to be removed from the game. Fans quickly shared photos and videos of the funny moment online.

Despite wearing a Mets jersey to the game, Simmons showed his loyalty to the Detroit Tigers by wearing something to represent his favorite team underneath.

J.K. Simmons first played J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” movies, finishing with the third film in 2007. He later reprised the role with a brief appearance after the credits of 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” where his character publicly discovered Spider-Man’s secret identity. Since then, Simmons has continued to play Jameson in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023).

The latest Spider-Man movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” arrives in theaters on July 31st. While it’s expected, J.K. Simmons’ participation hasn’t been officially announced yet.
