Not even the director of the House of the Dragon finale knows where Otto Hightower is

As a dedicated Game of Thrones enthusiast with over a decade of invested time and countless hours poring over George R.R. Martin’s epic series, I must admit that House of the Dragon has left me somewhat bewildered, to say the least. While it’s based on Fire & Blood, the show seems to be veering off course like a dragon with a broken wing, with characters straying far from their book counterparts.

The upcoming HBO series “House of the Dragon,” which serves as a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” draws inspiration from George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood.” However, following the conclusion of season 2, it would be more fitting to describe the show as being loosely based on the book, as many characters deviate significantly from their page counterparts, both emotionally and in terms of location (like Otto Hightower).

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In the early stages of the game, King Aegon dismisses his grandpa Otto Hightower from his role as the Hand of the King. However, in the book Fire & Blood, old man Otto continues to linger around King’s Landing, secretly trying to keep his family’s grip on the Iron Throne. But in the show, he disappears mysteriously and is off-screen for most of it…until the final episode of the season when we catch a glimpse of him locked up in some unknown prison cell at the very end.

It’s assumed that Otto might be held captive by House Beesbury amidst the ongoing conflict between blacks and greens in the Reach. However, this is merely speculation since we are not privy to his whereabouts. Not even the director of the finale, Geeta Patel, knows his location. In fact, she expressed her curiosity about it, stating that she was asked to film a certain scene but still doesn’t know where Otto is. “I want to know too,” she said in an interview with Variety. “They don’t tell us! They keep their secrets well.” She further expressed her displeasure about the lack of transparency, stating that even the actors aren’t informed.

In a conversation with journalists, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal indicated that they were happy to have Rhys return to the storyline, and subtly suggested that the story arc involving Otto Hightower is not concluded yet.

As a seasoned writer and avid reader of the “Fire & Blood” series, I’ve come to expect intricate plot twists and character developments that often take characters far from their initial storylines. Based on my analysis, it seems that Otto might be situated in The Reach and could play a significant role in the unfolding saga of Alicent Hightower’s son Daeron Targaryen, a character we’ve only heard whispers about thus far. Given this new position, he will likely be at a considerable distance from his earlier story arc. However, considering the unpredictable nature of George R.R. Martin’s epic tale, this isn’t entirely surprising. The author has a knack for keeping readers on their toes and ensuring that even the most seasoned fans are left guessing until the very end.

In 2026, we can expect “House of the Dragon” to resume for its third season. Following this, a final fourth season is planned to conclude the narrative.
