The Mountain Top Villas and Restaurant in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, has now officially opened its doors to guests. Here’s an introduction to this unique complex consisting of five villas and a dining establishment nestled among the mountain peaks.

Situated approximately a two-hour drive or train ride from central Tokyo, this property is accessible by either mode of transport. Being the seventh establishment under NOT A HOTEL, the architectural design was masterminded by Makoto Tanijiri and Ai Yoshida from SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE. The announcement of this project was made in August 2023, with all five villas being sold out during the construction phase. TOJI complex signifies the second collaboration between the duo and NOT A HOTEL, following their work on NASU.

These TOJI villas are nestled in an ancient Japanese spa town, graced by the flowing waters from the Tone River’s source. Overlooking the mountains, these five individual villas boast breathtaking vistas. Here, residents can witness the transformation of Japan’s four seasons right at their window, from winter’s snowy landscapes to spring’s blossoming cherry trees, summer’s lush greenery, and autumn’s leaf-changing spectacle. The exterior draws inspiration from traditional Japanese mountain huts, with a copper plate roof and walls. Notable design elements include a dining area illuminated by Isamu Noguchi’s Akari lamps and a table seating eight. The ceiling is crafted using innovative woodworking techniques. The design intentionally leaves some areas darker due to its 6m height, showcasing the stunning Minakami valley view.

Each villa measures approximately 252.28 square meters and can comfortably host eight guests. It comes equipped with two bedrooms, a bathroom with a shower, and a private parking space. Extra facilities include an open-air bath, sauna, and a living room overlooking a 15-meter infinity pool that connects to a natural hot spring and an outdoor cold bath near the sauna. Residents can participate in various seasonal activities such as rafting, skiing, and golf nearby. Conveniently located next to these villas is an exclusive restaurant for guests, Kigi, which follows the theme of “fire and water,” offering dishes made with local ingredients.
