Nosferatu star Lily-Rose Depp explains “bittersweet” ending change
As a seasoned gamer of horror-themed films, I must say that the remake of Nosferatu has certainly left an indelible mark on my cinematic soul. The decision to alter the ending of this classic vampire tale was a bold move, and one that I found to be quite intriguing.
Lily-Rose Depp’s portrayal of Ellen is captivating, her performance exuding a sense of longing and sacrifice that resonated with me on a deep level. The bittersweet conclusion she described felt heartbreakingly real, as if I could almost taste the mix of sorrow and satisfaction in the air.
Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok was equally mesmerizing, his performance embodying the fear, fascination, and ultimately, the tragic beauty of the undead. The scene where he embraces Ellen in her bedroom is a testament to their complex relationship, one that transcends the boundaries of life and death.
The decision to make this scene more intimate was a stroke of genius, as it elevated the emotional stakes and added an extra layer of depth to the story. The tension between these two characters was palpable, and I found myself holding my breath as they came together in that fateful embrace.
One can’t help but wonder if this is truly love, or something darker and more primal. Perhaps it’s a bit of both, a twisted dance between two souls bound by fate. And if that’s not romantic, I don’t know what is!
As for the joke, well, let’s just say that watching Nosferatu has made me crave a good game of “Never Have I Ever” – especially when it comes to the undead! After all, who doesn’t love a bit of vampire romance?
Nosferatu spoilers follow.
Nosferatu star Lily-Rose Depp has explained the remake’s “bittersweet” ending change.
In the recently premiered theater release of the modern take on the timeless vampire movie, the storyline culminates with Ellen, portrayed by the actor, and Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgård), tragically engaging in a lethal embrace, both being unclothed, within her bedroom.
In this particular moment, the vampire drinks Ellen’s blood directly from her chest. Despite her efforts to restrain him, they both wait until dawn breaks, at which point the sunlight slays the vampire, causing him to bleed profusely from his face prior to Ellen succumbing to death due to excessive blood loss.
In contrast to the 1922 version, the ending here presents a variation, as the characters are dressed and instead of vanishing in a cloud of smoke upon his demise, Orlok adopts a different method.
As a gamer putting my thoughts into words, I’d say, “Talking about the visual overhaul, I shared with USA Today that it’s both heartbreaking and oddly satisfying because she’s doing something noble by breaking the curse, but at the same time, she’s also feeding an inner craving she has for something dark.
“We wanted all of those things to be palpable, to feel real,” she added.
Skarsgård explained that this particular scene revolves around themes of “death and rapture,” and his character experiences a unique moment as if he’s seeing the sun after centuries have passed.
He seems captivated by it, feeling both fear and other emotions, he explained. In some sense, perhaps that was Orlok’s intention all along.
In simpler terms, Skarsgård said he wanted the audience to think, “Will he devour her with a bite?” followed by a surprise kiss. He explained that the movie is a mix of an exaggerated fairy tale and dark story, yet it also portrays two characters possibly falling in love.
What you’re feeling isn’t exactly love, but it might be something similar enough to understand as such. If it’s not love, then perhaps it’s a longing or hunger, an insatiable passion, and a strong urge to consume.
Nosferatu is out now in UK and US cinemas.
