Norman Reedus weighs in on Daryl Dixon’s first ever onscreen kiss
As a gamer with a deep-rooted passion for The Walking Dead franchise, I must admit that the latest episode of Daryl Dixon season 2 was nothing short of exhilarating. The moment Daryl shared an intimate kiss with Isabelle was not only heartwarming but also a testament to their bond, forged in the crucible of post-apocalyptic France.
In every season of The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), a key character, has been present. Yet, up until now, fans have never witnessed him sharing a romantic kiss with anyone. However, the last episode of Daryl Dixon’s second season broke this trend when Daryl and Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) exchanged an emotional kiss in the closing scene.
In the aftermath of an apocalypse, Daryl and Isabelle stumbled upon each other in France. Their paths crossed due to their common goal: safeguarding Laurent, a child believed by some to be the messiah. Over time, they’ve created a makeshift family unit. Following numerous harrowing experiences filled with the specter of mortality, Daryl and Isabelle exchanged a tender kiss in the recent chapter of their story.
The kiss sparked intense emotions within the fanbase, and according to Reedus, future romantic encounters aren’t likely to occur. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated that there was no intention for a more intimate relationship, rather it was “peeling back the curtains to glimpse at the concept of it.” Regarding the filming of the scene, it wasn’t particularly romantic. As Reedus disclosed, mosquitoes were buzzing around our faces throughout the entire take.
Daryl has had some significant romantic relationships in his past, with Leah (Lynn Collins) from The Walking Dead being one of the most memorable. However, she was a part of the violent group known as the Reapers, and ultimately, Daryl ended up killing her. Throughout his career, Reedus has shared many on-screen kisses with various co-stars across different projects. One such instance that stands out is when he kissed Alan Rickman, an experience he finds amusing. He recalls this by saying, “Let me tell you about the first time I ever did it, which is quite funny. I was in a movie called Dark Harbor, and guess who I also locked lips with? None other than Alan Rickman. But that’s not the kiss I was referring to.
The actual onscreen kiss that he remembers with dismay is with Polly Walker, who you may know from her portrayal of Portia Featherington in Bridgerton. This kiss also happens in Dark Harbor, where Rickman and Walker play a married couple and Reedus plays a mysterious stranger. What made this even more awkward than with Alan Rickman? Well, allow Reedus to dish the details: “It was my first big passionate kiss right on the screen. The actress, Polly, was super, super patient with me, but I went in full tongue, and then she was going [mimics painful grunting] and I was like, ‘What the f— is happening?’”
Oh, Norman. Clearly lessons have been learned.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2, The Book of Carol, continues Sundays on AMC.
