Norman Reedus reveals how the Daryl-Carol changed on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

As a die-hard fan of “The Walking Dead”, I must say that the latest season, focusing on Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, has been nothing short of exhilarating. The journey these characters have embarked on, from Greenland to France, is a testament to their unyielding spirit and determination.

In “The Walking Dead: The Book of Carol,” character Carol (Melissa McBride) embarks on a journey to Europe to reconnect with her friend and fellow survivor Daryl (Norman Reedus). Accompanied by Ash (Manish Dayal), she takes a flight over the Atlantic Ocean, making a pit stop in Greenland. Upon landing in France, Carol finds herself right in the heart of a revolution.

While Carol has been diligently searching for him, Daryl has found himself right in the heart of conflicts in France. Alongside Isabelle (played by Clemence Poesy) and a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), who is thought to be the Messiah by many in the region, they formed an unconventional family. Their resolute efforts to safeguard Laurent led both Daryl and Isabelle to be imprisoned within Mont Saint-Michel. Eventually, Daryl managed to escape, only to learn that Isabelle had tragically perished in battle. It wasn’t long before he reconnected with Carol once more.

The reunion between them didn’t turn out as fans anticipated, as they barely had a chance to discuss things during their confrontation. Instead, they immediately greeted each other with an embrace and resumed fighting together as if no time had passed. However, the on-screen reunion that we witnessed was not how it was initially written in the script. Daryl (Reedus) explained this to Entertainment Weekly, stating that “it was originally written differently, where she finds me in jail.” They later decided to alter the scene.

In the end, Reedus was the one who proposed the alteration. He felt it was important to demonstrate that Daryl continues to battle; there wasn’t room for niceties. It isn’t until after his rampage that the extraordinary encounter with Carol strikes him. As he put it, “I wanted the emotion to be distinct.” Not merely, ‘She finds me and I’m feeble.’ I aimed for it to start weak, then he gets up and becomes a lethal force — followed by a sudden pause, as if hitting a record scratch. Everything carries on around them, but the noise stops, leaving an eerie sense of uncertainty: “Is this real? You’re right in front of me.” That’s what we worked on.

“It had to be different than you just found me. The energy had to be out of this world when it happened. It had to be frenetic — just pure adrenaline.”

From my gaming viewpoint, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride when talking about McBride’s scene. To me, it was simply delightful, as I shared this sentiment with Entertainment Weekly. You see, while Daryl was in France, I, Carol, had no clue he was there. He was tirelessly battling hordes of walkers, unaware that I was en route to find him. The unexpected sight of me, on the other side of the world, must have been quite surreal for him!

McBride shared insights about the challenging nature of filming within the historic Mont Saint-Michel commune in France. In contrast to shooting in Georgia’s forests, he found it to be particularly harsh due to the extreme wind and cold conditions, even during night shoots. However, with season 3 filming set in Spain, there’s no denying that warmer weather is on the horizon!
