Noah Wyle Reveals Why ‘The Pitt’ Has No Music!
The series is often praised for being exceptionally captivating, particularly due to its intense portrayal of a single emergency room shift. What sets the program apart is its uncanny realism in representing medical procedures and the typical operations within a hospital setting.
One factor that set this production apart was something many might not have realized – the absence of background music. In an interview, the lead actor, Noah Wyle, explained this intentional creative choice: “From the very beginning, we opted to exclude any kind of soundtrack from the show. By doing so, we’ve essentially stripped away the illusion that it’s a TV production, and instead, aim for our audience to experience genuine emotions without the influence of music telling them when to feel sad or excited.
Instead, the audience gets a sense of the characters’ emotions and physical experiences through the dialogue and the sounds of machinery.
In other words, we’re using the rhythmic flow of medical terminology and the background noise of the machines as our musical accompaniment in this scene. That’s according to Wyle’s explanation.
In simpler terms, Wyle explained, “They act their lines with such conviction, it feels like an emotional rating.” He went on to say, “It’s less crucial that the audience comprehends every detail and more important that they perceive the doctors as knowledgeable.” Lastly, he referred to the show as a form of “exhibiting competence” or “competency display”.
The Pitt Actors Worked Hard To Maintain The Realism
Wyle commended his co-actors, who were not only skilled in memorizing extensive lines and handling stage props, but also had the ability to perform procedures while moving backwards, as they had undergone as much medical training as feasible.
John Wells, who directed the pilot episode and held an executive producer role, advised me sternly, “Treat them too well.” He then intentionally kept us separate, so I ate lunch alone during that time.” In this production of The Pitt, there was a deliberate attempt to mimic the hierarchical structure found in actual hospitals.
The Pitt Season 1 is streaming on MAx.
