No, Yellowstone season 6 isn’t happening (but it’s not the end yet)
As a dedicated fan who has followed the Yellowstone universe since its inception, I must admit that the recent developments have left me both puzzled and intrigued. The news of a spinoff featuring Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser respectively, is a breath of fresh air. However, the absence of a traditional season 6 seems a bit perplexing, much like trying to find a clear path through the Duttons’ tangled web of secrets and power plays.
The iconic Dutton Ranch bid farewell this past Sunday, December 15, coinciding with the final episode of ‘Yellowstone’ season 5 – or so it seems. Given the turmoil unfolding behind the scenes surrounding the popular Paramount Network series, it’s no wonder there’s some confusion about its future. Is it canceled? Will it return no more? Could we be expecting a ‘Yellowstone’ season 6?
The situation surrounding the future of “Yellowstone” has been confusing and unnecessary due to conflicting reports over the past year following Kevin Costner’s departure from the show. However, it appears that the uncertainty has been cleared up in time for the original series, which spawned numerous successful spin-offs, to conclude its fifth season – possibly even its final season unofficially.
Despite the Paramount Network labeling the Season 5 finale as such, a new phase appears to be emerging for the hit Western series Yellowstone. Unlike a typical Season 6, it seems the storyline won’t conclude but rather continue in a fresh format. Prior to the Season 5 ending, there was news about an upcoming spinoff focusing on characters Beth and Rip.
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser to star in Yellowstone spinoff
On December 11th, Deadline announced that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have officially signed contracts for a forthcoming spinoff series, which is part of the Yellowstone universe. Since this new spinoff will unfold in contemporary times and may include additional cast members from the original series, it essentially serves as an extension of Yellowstone, but not season 6. Understood?
In the upcoming series, Reilly and Hauser will once again take on their characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. While specifics about the plot are yet to be disclosed, it’s expected that some existing storylines will carry over while introducing fresh characters and narratives to keep the story engaging. This new series is advantageous for Paramount as the original had a streaming agreement with Peacock, whereas a spinoff wouldn’t. The decision to skip season 6 and move directly to a spinoff was partly driven by this opportunity.
As a devoted fan, it’s clear to me that Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind the Yellowstone universe, is set to weave his magic once again in crafting the upcoming spinoff. According to Deadline, this new series, starring Reilly and Hauser, might well bear the name of our beloved Yellowstone itself, a unique move for spinoffs within this ever-expanding world. This title choice strongly hints that this spinoff could very well serve as an alternative to a traditional sixth season.
In summary, the TV series “Yellowstone” will have a total of 53 episodes over its five seasons following the season 5B finale on Dec. 15. This captivating show debuted in 2018 and swiftly gained immense popularity, setting new ratings records and becoming one of the most discussed shows on cable TV. Despite not receiving Emmy nominations, Kevin Costner secured a Golden Globe award in 2023 for his role.
Besides the upcoming spinoff, another one named “The Madison” is also on its way. Originally titled for a 2024 release and featuring Matthew McConaughey, this series has been rescheduled for 2025. Now starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Patrick J. Adams, and Beau Garrett, it’s set in the present day. (Oh, remember all that earlier chaos?!)
Yellowstone airs on the Paramount Network and streams on Peacock.
