No, these Star Trek characters don't need their own series

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who’s spent countless hours in the company of the Starfleet crew, I must admit that I find myself at odds with Chad Porto’s recent suggestions for potential series characters. While I appreciate his enthusiasm and the time he’s invested in exploring these possibilities, I fear some of his choices might be as misguided as a Klingon attempting to navigate a Ferengi market.

Star Trek boasts a rich cast of characters that it might consider for future series. Characters such as Captain Seven of Nine, played by Jeri Ryan, are ones we’re eager to see return. However, there are other characters who may not be robust enough to carry their own show. Lately, Chad Porto proposed three characters he believes could have standalone series, and on occasion, I find myself vehemently disagreeing with such suggestions, much like we do here at Red Shirts Always Die.

Garrett Wang’s character, Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager, was terrific, but he stayed at the rank of ensign for the entire show. This means we didn’t have a chance to witness his growth into a truly powerful character. Even if it were possible for him to be promoted to captain in the storyline, creating a series centered around Captain Kim might face challenges. Fans might find it hard to accept him as a captain because we never saw his progression towards that position. A series featuring him and Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), however, could potentially work well.

In a conversation, Chad referenced George Kirk, who is Captain Kirk’s deceased brother from Star Trek: The Original Series. However, he has been resurrected in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Unfortunately, this character remains relatively unknown, and the series hasn’t managed to make him particularly captivating. Additionally, it may prove challenging not to draw continuous comparisons with his illustrious brother, Captain Kirk, as he might consistently overshadow George Kirk.

Later on, Chad made his ultimate pick – Dr. Katherine Pulaski. He inquired about our knowledge regarding the doctor. Frankly, we didn’t know much and many fans weren’t eager for more information. She replaced Dr. Beverly Crusher, which wasn’t exactly a favorable start. To make matters worse, her gruff demeanor and conflicts with Data didn’t endear her to us. The Next Generation didn’t really develop any appealing traits for her, so it seems risky to base an entire series on such a character, setting the stage for potential missteps.

Instead of delving into lesser-known Star Trek characters for exciting roles or guest appearances, it’s advisable for the franchise to be selective when choosing which characters to focus on prominently. It might be beneficial to leave certain characters unexplored in order to maintain a balance.
