‘No One Was Paid’: Netflix Claps Back After Diddy’s Camp Decries New Doc

The four-part documentary series, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, has recently been in the news because of a disagreement over its production. Just before the series premiered on Netflix this week, Combs’ representatives accused the streaming service and the filmmakers of using footage without permission. The director, Alexandria Stapleton, has refuted these claims, stating the footage was obtained legally. Now, a Netflix spokesperson is addressing the allegations.

The docuseries includes recently discovered video of Sean “Diddy” Combs, filmed in the six days before his September 2024 arrest. Combs’ representatives claim he intentionally had the video recorded for his own private use and that Netflix obtained it without authorization. Netflix responded to a report in Us Weekly, stating they did not acquire the footage illegally.

The allegations surrounding the documentary ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’ are untrue. The film wasn’t connected to any previous discussions between Sean Combs and Netflix. All footage used, including scenes of Combs before his legal issues, was obtained legally.

The new documentary, The Reckoning, created by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, details Diddy’s journey to fame and the recent legal challenges he’s faced. Diddy and his team strongly criticized the film, calling it unfair and accusing Netflix’s Ted Sarandos of mishandling it. Diddy also expressed frustration that 50 Cent, whom he considers a long-standing rival, was involved in the project. In response, Netflix defended the documentary and explained 50 Cent’s role in its production.

This isn’t intended to be a critical attack or payback. Curtis Jackson, also known as 50 Cent, is an executive producer, but he doesn’t oversee the creative side of things. And no one involved was compensated for their participation.

In 2024, 50 Cent announced he was working on a documentary about Diddy. Since then, he’s been publicly teasing Diddy amid his legal troubles. 50 Cent has criticized Diddy’s legal team and even stated he would try to stop former President Trump from potentially pardoning Diddy. Despite their long-standing rivalry, 50 Cent recently explained that his feud with Diddy didn’t influence his choice to create the documentary.

It’s pretty surreal watching the fallout from the Reckoning documentary while Sean Combs is actually serving time. As you might remember, he got a split verdict back in July – the docuseries lays it all out – and was found guilty on two counts related to sex trafficking. He was sentenced last October, and during the hearing, he publicly apologized to his accusers. It’s a complicated situation, and the timing of all this, with him already in prison at Fort Dix, definitely adds another layer to it all.

People with Netflix subscriptions can now watch a documentary called Sean Combs: The Reckoning which details a legal controversy, and it’s already proving popular. As of today, it’s the most-watched show on Netflix in the United States. It’s still unclear if the arguments that happened behind the scenes during filming will lead to any further issues.
