‘No One Had Seen Anybody Else Host Jeopardy For Nearly 40 Years’: Ken Jennings Reflects On How He Felt About Taking Over For Alex Trebek
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been five years since Alex Trebek stopped hosting Jeopardy!, a fact that might leave many fans of the show utterly astonished. For 37 years, Trebek was the constant presence on this historic game show, making it an essential part of many people’s evening routines, even after his passing. Following a period of guest hosts and confusion, Mayim Bialik was initially chosen as co-host in late 2023, but eventually, Ken Jennings became the sole successor to the beloved icon that Trebek was. Now, Jennings reflects on those turbulent times and shares his experiences of taking over from the late legend.
The syndicated game show has solidified its position and continues to thrive, as the new season of “Jeopardy! Masters” is set to air on television schedules in 2025. Second on the list of all-time greatest “Jeopardy!” champions, Jennings shared with People that the period following Trebek’s passing was challenging due to widespread mourning, a feeling he himself experienced, and knowing that no one could fill Trebek’s unique role entirely. In his own words:
After Alex left us, it became quite challenging as we all dearly missed his presence. For almost four decades, no one else had stepped into his shoes on Jeopardy!, making the transition difficult and unfamiliar. Adjusting was tough, and I felt uncomfortable being in that role.
It’s clear he wasn’t mistaken. Alex Trebek’s passing was a difficult reality to accept, sparking numerous discussions on how the show would proceed without him. I can scarcely imagine being in the shoes of the 50-year-old Jennings at that time, with fans clamoring for him to step in, despite the studio not yet fully embracing the idea. And even though he initially harbored reservations about taking over what many consider the greatest game show of all time, Jennings eventually took the leap and hasn’t looked back since.
At one point, Jennings stepped into a deeper personal view, admitting he wasn’t quite prepared to relinquish the legacy. In retrospect, he understood he would observe the late entertainer extensively enough to mimic Trebek’s actions and take up the hosting mantle. Now, with some time passed, Jennings feels more assured than ever about his ability to carry on the tradition.
In a simpler and more conversational way, the sentence could be: I needed Alex, as if he were my partner, but thankfully, I had watched him perform often enough to have an intuition about his actions. This internal feeling is what helped me get through those times. Now, after some time has passed, I’ve gained more experience and feel a bit more at ease when I’m in similar situations.
Over the past few weeks, Jennings seems to be gradually gaining confidence in his role as host, now that he’s taken on the new responsibilities. However, opinions about him among fans are mixed, and he accepts this because longtime viewers of the show tend to prefer what they’ve grown accustomed to over the years. We all understood that this transition period would be strange and challenging, but it’s encouraging to see Jennings recognizes that it won’t happen overnight. Despite this, there are still positive signs for the future, as he intends to maintain the classic format of Jeopardy! while bridging any gaps.
Be sure to tune into Jeopardy! Masters‘ new episodes airing on ABC every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET.
