Since the beginning of film, few movies have exceeded expectations quite like Mad Max: Fury Road. When it was released, it had been three decades since the last Mad Max film. During those years, director George Miller had become known mostly for making family-friendly movies, such as the Happy Feet series.
Tom Hardy took over the role of Max from Mel Gibson in Fury Road, a film that faced over ten years of difficult development. The production was notoriously challenging, with early reports – many of which turned out to be true – suggesting a tense and unpleasant atmosphere, and that Hardy and his co-star, Charlize Theron, didn’t get along.

After filming finished in 2012, Fury Road seemed to fade from view. With very little publicity – no photos or trailers – and rumors of problems during production, many people thought the movie might be a failure. That all changed in 2014 when the first trailer was shown at Comic Con, and when the film finally came out the next year, it was immediately hailed as a brilliant achievement.
The new film is a remarkable success – a bold, large-scale adventure that fully immerses viewers in its detailed world. Charlize Theron’s performance as Furiosa is instantly iconic, the action is incredibly impressive, and the film boasts some of the best world-building in recent blockbuster cinema.
Despite being almost entirely one extended car chase, Mad Max: Fury Road remains incredibly exciting and engaging. Director George Miller consistently raises the stakes while also allowing for meaningful character moments. The film exceeded even the highest expectations.
Mad Max: Fury Road Has No Right Being Such A Masterpiece
A full explanation of the difficulties making Mad Max: Fury Road would require a lengthy article, but the main problems are worth noting. The film had to relocate from Australia to Namibia, and the cast and crew faced extreme heat and dust storms during filming.
The actors struggled to follow George Miller’s vision for the film. He didn’t shoot scenes in order, instead filming small segments only as needed for editing. This unconventional approach frustrated some cast members, and was sometimes made worse by Tom Hardy’s intense and often difficult method acting as the main character.
Filming the fast-paced action sequences in the desert presented a huge logistical challenge. While much of Mad Max: Fury Road‘s action is real – not created with special effects – and looks fantastic because the crew could take the time to do it right, the intense heat and demanding conditions made it a difficult shoot.
Warner Bros. grew worried about the rising costs of Fury Road and nearly shut down production. The film also generated a huge amount of footage, making the editing process extremely difficult. Initial test screenings received negative feedback, with many viewers finding the film confusing.
Mad Max: The Wasteland Might Be Revived As A TV Show
While Mad Max: Fury Road was a huge success, earning award nominations and widespread critical acclaim as one of the best films of the 21st century, its sequel, 2024’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, unfortunately failed to resonate with audiences despite positive reviews.
It took so long to make Fury Road that director George Miller developed stories for two sequels: Furiosa and a new Mad Max film called The Wasteland. After Furiosa didn’t perform as well financially, a new Wasteland movie seemed unlikely. However, in late 2025, news broke that it had been approved as a series on HBO Max.
There hasn’t been much talk about a sequel to The Wasteland lately, but many fans would love to see George Miller finish his Mad Max: Fury Road trilogy with one more film. Really, any new installment in the Mad Max series would be exciting news.
