No, Gus isn't in Industry season 3 (And here's why)

As a dedicated fan of HBO’s Industry, I must say that the return of this gripping drama has been nothing short of exhilarating. The third season is shaping up to be a rollercoaster ride, and I can feel the tension building with each episode.

The hit HBO series “Industry” is back for its third season, receiving outstanding feedback after only two episodes. This British drama is gaining more viewers and I have no doubt that this season will be the most significant one yet. The show offers a glimpse into the world of Pierpoint & Co, an investment bank, revealing the good, the bad, and sometimes downright evil aspects of corporate life, as well as how far individuals are prepared to go in order to achieve success. In the first season, we saw recent graduates vying for permanent positions at the bank, while seasons 2 and 3 focus on the journeys of those who make it through.

In addition to our regular characters, we follow up with those who depart from Pierpoint, such as Gus Sackey, portrayed by David Jonsson. Gus grapples with his role at the bank following his colleague Hari’s demise in season 1. The bank proves too morally questionable for him, a decision prompted by Hari’s death and one that resonates with viewers. In the second season, Gus embarks on different assignments to figure out his future path. Although he may not be as pivotal as Harper or Yasmin, Gus is an important aspect of the series. As a result, viewers have noticed his conspicuous absence in the third season.

David Jonsson left Industry for other projects

It turns out Jonsson has indeed departed from ‘Industry’, and during an interview with GQ to publicize his new movie ‘Alien: Romulus’, he discussed the factors leading to this choice. He mentioned that a significant part of it stemmed from scheduling conflicts, but there were more aspects at play. Further elaborating, Jonsson shared that he felt it was time to explore different roles and broaden his acting career beyond the series, which he’s already doing with projects like ‘Romulus’ and an upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Long Walk’, where he’s currently filming.

I’m quite excited about my upcoming ventures! There’s a movie titled “Wasteman” co-starring Tom Blyth that will be released soon, as well as a TV show named “The Road Trip” landing on Paramount+. It’s clear I have a full plate with a diverse range of projects, and it’s all part of my deliberate plan to explore different creative avenues.

But I think it’s also quite important as an actor, especially a young one, y’know, you’ve got to spread your wings a bit. You’ve got to try new things. As much as I love Gus, I had to… It’s very easy, isn’t it, for people to just see you as a character, and then you move through your career, and people go, that’s— yeah, it’s that character. And I’m like, no, no, that’s not the kind of actor that I am. So as much as I loved it, and I think it was down to scheduling, I think it’s important to do new things, and that’s what this is.

David Jonsson

Maintaining an option for a possible re-entry into the industry at some point down the line, Jonsson expressed optimism about the series and his fellow cast members. Although I’m disappointed that Gus won’t be in season 3, I’m eager to follow Jonsson’s career progression. He shines brilliantly in “Alien: Romulus,” and it’s wonderful to see the praise he’s been receiving for his acting. He truly deserves it!

Don’t forget to catch Jonsson’s 2023 romantic comedy “Rye Lane” on Hulu, an underrated gem that garnered the actor a nomination for the British Independent Film Awards.

Season 3 of the series “Industry” is currently available for streaming on Max. Fresh installments debut every Sunday evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
