No Country for Old Men
Again, Paramount+ serves as the residence for one of the Coen Brothers‘ finest films, a screen adaptation of the 2005 novel bearing the same name by author Cormac McCarthy. You can now stream it on their platform.
Back in 2007, I found myself captivated by the gripping tale of No Country for Old Men. As a Vietnam War veteran and desert dweller like Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), I can relate to his fateful discovery of a fortune in cash during one of my hunting excursions in the arid Texas landscape. The allure of the money proved too strong, leading me down a dangerous path as I decided to keep it for myself. Little did I know that this action would trigger a nerve-wracking game of cat and mouse with the ruthless assassin Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who was hired to retrieve the stolen cash. Tommy Lee Jones delivers a compelling performance as Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a seasoned lawman investigating the crime scene of a drug deal gone awry, where I first stumbled upon that fateful briefcase.
2007 saw “No Country for Old Men” achieve both critical acclaim and significant commercial success. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasted an impressive approval rating of 93%. At the global box office, it raked in a substantial $171.6 million against a reported production budget of merely $25 million. Furthermore, at the 80th Academy Awards, it garnered eight nominations and took home accolades in four categories: Best Picture, Best Director (Joel and Ethan Coen), Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem), and Best Adapted Screenplay (the Coens).
New Cormac McCarthy Adaptation Announced 12 Years After Last Movie
Although “No Country for Old Men” is undoubtedly Cormac McCarthy’s most famous novel, it isn’t the sole one of his works to be turned into a movie. His novels such as “All the Pretty Horses,” “The Road,” and “Child of God” were all made into full-length films in 2000, 2009, and 2013 respectively. Moreover, McCarthy’s play “The Sunset Limited,” published in 2006, was also transformed into a television film in the year 2011.
12 Years since the release of “Child of God”, it has been announced that a new adaptation from Cormac McCarthy’s works is in the works. Good Chaos, along with Oscar-winning filmmaker Laszlo Nemes, have acquired the rights to bring “Outer Dark”, originally published in 1968, to the big screen. Since first reading “Outer Dark”, Nemes has harbored a dream to bring this novel to life as a film and to find a cinematic language that would honor Cormac McCarthy’s profound and cosmic work. This upcoming adaptation will serve as Nemes’ debut in English-language filmmaking.
Actors Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”) and Lily-Rose Depp (“Nosferatu”) are set to share leading roles in “Outer Dark,” where they’ll portray siblings Culla and Rinthy Holme. This film, due for production in 2026, is an adaptation of a story that unfolds in Appalachia during the Great Depression. The narrative revolves around a young woman who gives birth to her brother’s child. To hide the truth, the brother abandons the newborn in the woods, leading his sister to believe it died naturally. However, she later discovers his deception and embarks on a journey to find the baby herself.
No Country for Old Men is now streaming on Paramount+.
