They manage to do so after a series of unforeseen circumstances involving pirate treasure, criminal organizations, and undeniably, the power of friendship. This film features actors such as Sean Astin (later known for his role as Sam in “The Lord of the Rings”), Josh Brolin (who became Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Ke Huy Quan (recently winning an Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton. Despite past statements suggesting a sequel is imminent, one has yet to materialize…or has it?

It seems there was chatter earlier this month from The Sun suggesting a reunion of the cast for a sequel after all these years, but the cast members have since firmly debunked it, with at least one expressing hope that it might still come to fruition.

Among those expressing skepticism are Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton. On Twitter, Feldman exclaimed in bold letters, “IS GOONIES 2 REAL?!” indicating his seriousness. However, he clarified that there’s no truth to the rumors about a sequel, stating unequivocally, “I have no information that a sequel is in the works.” Interestingly, Feldman utilized this opportunity to promote an entirely different project instead, demonstrating a shrewd marketing strategy.

Meanwhile, Plimpton sent her message on Instagram. “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’” she wrote. “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.” But then there’s Sean Astin, who posted a mocked up poster for a theoretical follow-up. “It’s our time,” he wrote. “C’mon Steven…”

Is there any truth to rumors about a new Goonies film? It seems unlikely given the passing of director Richard Donner in 2021.
