It’s still unknown why Shaun White and Nina Dobrev ended their engagement, but differing views on having children didn’t appear to be the reason.

Nina Dobrev, 36, and her former fiancé, Paul Wesley, 39, dated for five years after first becoming a couple in 2020. Wesley proposed to the *Vampire Diaries* actress in October 2024.

The news of their breakup surprised many, as they were last seen together on August 31st, holding hands while out shopping in Los Angeles.

On September 7th, the actress appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Eternity without wearing her five-carat diamond engagement ring.

People were curious about the reason for the breakup and speculated whether disagreements about having children played a role, as this is a common issue for couples.

Both individuals desired to start a family, and neither felt more strongly about it than the other, according to a source who spoke with Us Weekly on Wednesday. This clarifies that disagreements about having children weren’t a factor in their situation.

Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for both Dobrev and White and have yet to hear back.

Another source revealed to the magazine that the actress was eager to marry Shaun and begin a family with him.

This news arrived only a week after the couple announced their breakup, which happened less than a year after they got engaged.

 A source told People at the time the decision to part ways was not taken lightly. 

According to a source, the couple decided to separate amicably, with both still caring for and respecting each other. They’ve chosen to go their separate ways but continue to support one another.

White and Dobrev frequently shared moments from their relationship with their fans, including their travels and mutual support for each other’s work.

In January 2024, Dobrev shared that they make time for a weekly date night, taking turns planning the activities.

She told People magazine that every week, she and her partner take turns planning a surprise date for each other. One week she plans it, keeping it a secret from him, and the next week he does the same for her.

Dobrev said these unique experiences ‘help keep our relationship fun and engaging, and give us dedicated time to connect.’

She pointed out that he spent a lot of time traveling the world, seeking out mountains to train at both before and during the Olympics.

Throughout most of our relationship, I did the traveling to visit him, but that changed during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was unemployed.

In October, she revealed White popped the question by writing: ‘RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.’ 

Meanwhile, White took to his social media to proudly declare: ‘She said YES!’ 

Pictures captured the heartwarming moment when White proposed to Dobrev, getting down on one knee with a stunning five-carat ring designed by Lorraine Schwartz. Dobrev was visibly shocked and covered her mouth in surprise.

After accepting his proposal, they shared a sweet embrace, with Shaun lifting her off her feet. 

White went to extraordinary lengths to make the proposal happen.

His earlier attempts to propose didn’t work out, so he finally decided to pop the question in late October at The Golden Swan, a restaurant in New York City.

He playfully hid the engagement ring in various places around the house before proposing, stashing it in spots like the tool shed and even the sock drawer.

Dobrev hadn’t been feeling great before the proposal and chose to rest at home, wanting to be healthy for a planned trip to Africa.

Not giving up, White moved forward with his proposal plans. He had his publicist create a fake invitation to a private dinner with Anna Wintour, hoping to lure Dobrev to the restaurant where he intended to propose.

‘He made the invite look so legitimate,’ she told Vogue at the time.

The actress from The Vampire Diaries even prepared for a photoshoot, believing a magazine was organizing it, but it was actually all arranged by White as a surprise.

Dobrev arrived a few minutes late to the event, which caused some concern because she noted that Vogue events usually begin promptly.

‘I was in a panic that Anna was waiting for me,’ she shared.

Walking into the restaurant, I immediately noticed how eerily silent it was, and honestly, it just made me worry even more that I was really late. It was unsettling, to say the least!

Once she entered the restaurant, however, White and a photographer were the only people inside.

I was completely stunned. I just stood there, staring, unable to react,” she explained, then added that she quickly moved into a state of happy disbelief.
