NiKo’s G2 fairytale tour saved by malbsMd in Shanghai Major thriller against HEROIC
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the Shanghai Major has been a rollercoaster ride, and today’s G2 vs HEROIC match was no exception! I’ve seen some incredible matches in my time, but the Mirage showdown between these two teams was nothing short of spectacular.
G2 hang on with a thrilling win over HEROIC at the Shanghai Major.
The duration of Nikola “NiKo” Kovac with G2 Esports persists following a thrilling 2-1 (6-13, 13-9, 16-14) victory over a determined HEROIC at the Shanghai Major. One of the most remarkable maps played this year on Mirage was also part of this intense matchup.
In a surprising turn of events, HEROIC’s remarkable journey in the tournament concluded as they faced defeat by G2. For a brief moment, it seemed like the team, currently undergoing their own rebuilding phase, might bring an end to NiKo Kovac’s tenure at G2. However, when it mattered most, Mario “malbsMd” Samayoa displayed exceptional skill and determination, effectively sealing HEROIC’s fate.
HEROIC open with strong start despite blistering NiKo performance
In the quarters, powerful team G2 faced off against underdogs HEROIC, who recently knocked out top-ranked Natus Vincere in the Elimination Stage of the major tournament, causing a global stir.
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled to see our young team determined to dispel any doubts about their previous performance. They boldly took down G2 on Ancient in the initial map of the series. Our AWPer, Abdul “degster” Gasanov, paved the way for us with a commendable 13-6 victory, but it was NiKo (scoring 22-12, maintaining a 1.69 rating) who truly captivated everyone’s attention, even in the face of G2’s swift defeat.
On the map Nuke, the top-tier marksman maintained his gameplay, giving G2 a tight 7-5 advantage. Swiftly capitalizing on this lead, G2 sealed the deal with NiKo dominating the match – amassing an impressive 20 kills during the CT side, spearheading his team towards a come-from-behind victory (13-9), thus pushing the series into a third map, Mirage.
MalbsMd takes huge step up as G2 fight off HEROIC
Despite the recovery process from G2 seeming complete, NiKo struggled in his final match, amassing only 13 kills, prompting the entrance of Mario “malbsMd” Samayoa to take on NiKo’s roles within the team following his departure after Shanghai. On the other hand, HEROIC stepped up their game significantly, displaying a stellar T side on Mirage. With crucial clutch rounds and extraordinary anti-eco victories, neither team could secure a win, necessitating overtime.
In regular play, MalbsMd racked up 24 kills and played a crucial role in overtime; one of his standout moments being an incredible one-versus-three clutch situation. Despite HEROIC’s valiant efforts to keep pace, they ultimately found themselves outmatched. G2 managed to maintain control and secured the win with a tight 16-14 victory in overtime.
With NiKo’s departure from G2 now confirmed, there is uncertainty about what the team will look like after Shanghai. However, malbsMd has been steadily improving his game at the Samurais and could play a crucial role if G2 aim to secure a major win as a farewell for NiKo. To achieve this, they must defeat either Vitality or FaZe in tomorrow’s semifinal.
