Nikki Glaser blasts Trump administration in monologue before mostly politics-free 2026 Golden Globes

Okay, let me tell you, the Golden Globes started with a bang this year! Nikki Glaser, as host, didn’t hold back, immediately making some playful but pointed jokes about Donald Trump and the possibility of him being president again. It definitely signaled that this year’s show wasn’t going to shy away from current events – we were in for a pretty political night!

Surprisingly, the Golden Globes ceremony mostly avoided political discussions for the rest of the night, and presenters and winners rarely mentioned Donald Trump.

Even when celebrities did speak up, like Mark Ruffalo and others protesting ICE, their statements were relatively quiet and didn’t generate much attention.

Given Glaser’s strong and pointed opening remarks, most people probably expected the show to address political topics, so it was surprising when it didn’t.

She didn’t say Trump’s name directly, but after acknowledging the prominent people present, she hinted at the Epstein files – many of which haven’t been made public – and his connection to them.

Honestly, when she talks about ‘A-listers,’ I think she’s playfully referring to the names in those Epstein files – the ones that have been released, but with so much information blacked out. It’s like there’s a list, but they’ve hidden almost everything on it, and she’s hinting at who might be on it.

She playfully announced, to the amusement of the crowd, that the Golden Globe for best editing should go to the Justice Department.

Glaser jokingly criticized CBS, the network that aired the Golden Globes, and made fun of their decision to hire Bari Weiss, the founder of Free Press and an opinion writer, as the new editor-in-chief of CBS News.

Weiss faced significant criticism for halting a news report about CECOT, a prison in El Salvador, where reports claimed Venezuelan citizens deported from the United States were subjected to torture.

Glaser jokingly awarded CBS News with the prize for ‘most editing,’ sarcastically calling it ‘America’s newest place to see fake news,’ and suggesting it was unnecessary.

After Glaser’s stand-up routine, mentions of Trump and his presidency almost completely stopped.

Amy Poehler likely hinted at her disapproval of the government’s criticism of public broadcasting when she playfully teased a fellow nominee, NPR, during the Best Podcast category.

Almost all of the podcasts nominated were hosted by and about celebrities, with the exception of NPR’s daily news briefing, Up First.

During her acceptance speech, Poehler expressed her admiration for the award itself and for her fellow nominees. She jokingly added that she was a fan of everyone except NPR, playfully accusing them of simply going through the motions and urging them to put more effort into their work.

Several celebrities quietly voiced their disapproval of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), particularly its current form under the second Trump administration.

Mark Ruffalo was among a group of celebrities – including Natasha Lyonne and Wanda Sykes – who showed their support by wearing ‘Be Good’ and ‘ICE Out’ pins.

According to Variety, protesters were demonstrating against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in several large cities led by Democrats, such as Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Chicago. The protests were also in response to the deaths of Renée Macklin Good and Keith Porter, who died during encounters with ICE agents.

On Wednesday in Minneapolis, ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Good, a 37-year-old woman, while she was driving her Honda Pilot during a demonstration against immigration raids.

From what I understand, ICE now says that Good actually hit Ross with her car and even tried to run him over. It was only after that, they claim, Ross fired three shots at her. It’s a really disturbing situation, and I’m trying to follow all the details as they come out.

As a lifestyle and body language expert, I’ve been reviewing the available footage, and it’s telling. Later video angles, including a clip from Ross’s own phone recorded at the same moment, seem to show Good actually trying to drive away from the ICE agent, suggesting she didn’t intend to confront him.

All three celebrities were seen wearing ‘Be Good’ pins, but the subtle display meant most viewers probably wouldn’t have understood what they were trying to show support for.

Nikki Glaser hosted the event for the second year running, bringing her famously unfiltered and bold comedic style to the role.

Let me tell you, hosting the Golden Globes was honestly the highlight of my career so far! It was such a blast, I’m already dreaming of doing it again. And, okay, I’m putting it out there – I’m hoping the team from The White Lotus is watching! I’ve always pictured myself as a Scandinavian Pilates instructor with a mysterious backstory, and I think I’d be perfect for season four. Fingers crossed they finally see my potential!

One Battle After Another is the frontrunner for nominations, receiving an impressive nine in total.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always excited to see artistry recognized, and this film is getting a lot of attention! It’s up for major awards – think Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay – and Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for Best Actor. Plus, the supporting cast is getting some well-deserved love, with nominations for Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn. It’s shaping up to be a really exciting awards season!

Oh my gosh, you guys, it’s REALLY happening! My absolute favorite is up for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy! It’s going up against some other good ones, like Blue Moon and Bugonia, but honestly, it DESERVES to win. I was totally shocked Wicked: For Good didn’t even get a nomination, seriously! But my beloved is in the running, and that’s all that matters! I’m already practicing my acceptance speech for them!

The Best Picture – Drama category features a competitive lineup including the films Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Values, and Sinners.

As a huge fan of ‘Adolescence,’ I was thrilled to see the show get even more recognition! After its Emmy success, it was amazing to see every single one of its stars – Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and young Owen Cooper – nominated for awards. And I was especially delighted by the surprise nomination for Ashley Walters – he’s fantastic in the series!

The show received a nomination for Best Limited TV Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie, joining titles like All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, Black Mirror, Dying for Sex, and The Girlfriend. This brings the show’s total nominations to five.

Despite strong competition, The White Lotus received six nominations, largely due to the outstanding performances of its talented cast.

This year’s awards show celebrates outstanding achievements in film, television, and—for the first time—podcasts, recognizing excellence in 28 different categories.

This year, each of the 28 award categories has six nominees, except for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which has eight.

The competition for Best Male Actor in a Television Drama is expected to be fierce, with strong contenders including Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Diego Luna (Andor), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Mark Ruffalo (Task), Adam Scott (Severance), and Noah Wyle (The Pitt).

Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty have both been nominated for acting awards. Sixteen-year-old Owen Cooper is up for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series, limited series, or TV movie.

He’ll be competing against Ashley Walters, his fellow actor, and Billy Crudup, along with Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Tramell Tillman, all known for their roles in popular TV shows like The Morning Show, The White Lotus, and Severance.

Erin is competing with Aimee Lou Wood, another British actress, for the Best Supporting Actress award in a TV series or movie. Both are nominated for their work on The White Lotus.

Rounding out the nominees are Carrie Coon for The White Lotus, Hannah Einbinder for Hacks, Catherine O’Hara for The Studio, and Parker Posey, also for The White Lotus.

Paul Mescal, the Irish actor, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. He’s up against Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Sean Penn, Adam Sandler, and Stellan Skarsgard, as well as receiving a nomination for his own performance in ‘Hamnet’.

The Best Screenplay category featured Paul Thomas Anderson (for One Battle After Another), Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme), Ryan Coogler (Sinners), Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident), and Maggie O’Farrell (Hamnet).

Joachim Trier’s Norwegian film, Sentimental Value, received eight nominations, closely following One Battle After Another in the film categories.

Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners, received seven nominations, while Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet and Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good each earned five nominations.

Everyone was surprised when the sequel to Wicked wasn’t nominated for Best Musical or Comedy. However, both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande did receive nominations for their acting performances.

Several expected nominations were missing, including one for Sydney Sweeney for her role in Christy as Best Actress in a drama. Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Julia Roberts (After The Hunt) were all nominated, as was Eva Victor, a relative newcomer who received recognition for her work in the independent film, Sorry, Baby.

Irish actress Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), who is seen as the front-runner, completes the category.

Neither Kathryn Bigelow’s Netflix thriller, A House of Dynamite, nor Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? received any nominations.

Timothée Chalamet is aiming to finally win a Golden Globe after being nominated four times. He was expected to win last year for his role in ‘A Complete Unknown,’ but didn’t. He recently won the Best Actor award at the Critics Choice Awards.

He’s nominated for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture this year for his role in Marty Supreme.

Dame Helen Mirren will receive a special Cecil B. DeMille Golden Globe award for her outstanding contributions to film. She’s already been announced as this year’s recipient of the lifetime achievement honor.

Dame Helen will receive a major award, joining past winners like Meryl Streep, Alfred Hitchcock, and Viola Davis. The ceremony will be held on January 8th, just three days before the Golden Globes awards.

Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne described Helen Mirren as a remarkably talented and powerful performer with an incredible career.

She’s an incredibly gifted performer who truly dedicates herself to her work, and continues to inspire artists and audiences. We are deeply honored to give her the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
